subforum in off topic area
 

Is it feasible to make a subforum in the off topic area where it's ok to post NSFW stuff and without filters and make people have to "sign up" to have access to it? Whatcha think>?

although i doubt itll happen,.. i support this idea.

Well it's hard to say I agree or disagree. I agree because it would get a lot of the *NWS* out of the OT area, but if we make certain people (18+ per say), that segregates like 70% of the members since most are underage. If we try to divide it by post numbers into the "special" area, then it gets even worse because then the mods look like they favor certain people more then others. That also encourages "post whoring" to get the status level.

I agree to this theory only if the members can think of a fair way of doing this.

I've seen other forums where you must be a member to view OT and posts in OT don't count toward the count. As for the underage thing, thats gonna be tuff to inforce.

I'm not saying the forum be responsible for 16 year olds signing up for NWS stuff, it would just take an e-mail to a mod or Admin asking to get approved for the forum, and I don't want anyone to look favored, it works in another forum i'm a member of, just thought i would try to limit the exposure of NWS stuff to people that don't want to hear/ see it

Well by labeling the thread *NWS* they have the choice or not to click or not to click. I am not sure how other forums work those areas other then by selecting or voting certain members for that area. And as I said, we would be seen as "favoring" if we worked it that way. That's a big no-no and it has been brought up in past threads that certain members saw us favoring members and did not like it at all.

this software package supports "groups", and the "groups" can be allowed access to specific forums.

so in other words there could be a NWS group, that you have to sign up seperately for and have a mod approve you for access. this is how it used to be done on srtforums

i dont think trying to limit it to those who are 18+ is unfair.. its just keeping the kids out of a place they shouldnt be

I'm not saying favor anyone as long as it's in the forum rules to just shoot a pm to a mod/ admin it's fair game for anyone, the only reason it would be "limited" is then if someone doesn't subscribe themselves they don't see it... im' a member of other forums that do this, and it works fine, 90% of the members are subscribed and love the fact there's a place to let loose.

Ahhh okay now I understand better, but just keep in mind that this is a forum for everyone, and if it doesn't include "the group" it's not fair. [not my motto]

But I like the idea!

and i totally agree with inclusion, so therefore everyone that asked would be allowed to enter... IMO it is looking out for the group.

And "events" or meetings are completely different then Internet forum activity/who can post where.

I doubt this would happen, for a number of reasons.

Primarily, Bryan has always taken the stand that the forum should be open and appropriate for viewing by people of all ages, as evident by the large number of <21 year old members. I agree with him on this point 100%

From a moderator perspective, we have always worked to keep anything that would be more risque than pg-13ish off the forum. Many of our users (myself included) spend some time browsing at work. This has led to the labeling of certain boarderline topics as being NSFW, or other more inappropriate threads being edited or locked. I don't forsee this changing in the future.

Much like an 'unmoderated' forum, I'm not sure that having a NWS forum would really add enough to TST to out weigh the additional effort it would require on the moderator team.

To be honest if you wanna do something like this start a email list. I know on other forums thats what people do. But for this to be public i doubt it will happen. I would however be interested in a nws email list.
