I have two friends that have them...they go on and on about the mileage and how there car was a more sensible decision over my car.. For the morons ...lets do the math.

I bought a 07 legacy for about 20k.

They each bought a new Prius for around 28k


How long before they make back that 8k?

with average mileage i'm guessing 5-7 years.

Don't get me wrong...if you do heavy duty mileage it make sense but for everyday commuting etc... It really doesn't. Is it just me? Am i the only one that sees this?

If i was really worrried about mpg. I would buy a 36mpg corrola priced in the mid teens and bank the difference.

lol prius owners also claim they get like 50mpg.. which just isnt true.

Prius's are one of the most hideous vehicles on the market and they drive like tanks. My gf's dad just bought one for his DD, I laugh every time I see him driving it.

My uncle has one. He averaged 57mpg on a trip we took to South Carolina..

But im with the OP on it not making too much of a difference. Same goes for all these people selling off their new SUV's at a loss just to pick up a car. It takes at least 10yrs in most cases just to cover that loss with your mpg saved..

I feel like people just jump on the bandwagon without really thinking about it..

a lot of people dont see into the long-term, and buy a prius.

I got a civic for free that gets 40 mpg. I think I have you all beat. It makes up for my V8 Jeep and premium only Eclipse.

Id rather spent my money on the cost of the car rather then the high costs of gas. you also have to think about how much replacement batteries cost.

!964 Austin Mini Moke- equally unsafe, way more fun to drive, probably faster, 60's technology...50mpg. You can keep your Prius and you Smart car.

My Escort cost me $450 and gets 35-40 mpg. You could get an Escort or two for what the batteries are going to cost. Car and Driver and a couple other mags tested the Pruis and I think the best mileage they could ever get was in the mid 40s if that. Non-SI new Civics will pull over 40 mpg on the highway.

Your wrong on that one. You guys have to remember that people don't only buy the prius for the gas mileage. As crazy as it sounds there are people that simply like the car even though you cant understand it. I'm sure everyone of you has had someone question your car and why you would buy something like that or use it in the way you do. My girlfriend has a prius and I love driving it. Its comfortable, user friendly, fun to see how many mpgs you can get, and drives very well, all with the reliability of a toyota.

I easily get 47-50mpg all day. You have to get use to driving it before you get the best gas mileage. And as for the escort..... how are you going to compare fords little turd that is probably from the early 90's to a new toyota? The escort was a little death trap that couldn't hit 70mph on the highway.

Atleast you get HIDs...:-p

lol ok whatever even if it gets 50mpg... it creates more pollution to manufacture that car than it does to drive a hummer.

don't forget ...the mpg claims from prius owners are from the trip computer.....real accurate...wink wink.

I wanna know why hybrid cars are generally ugly....i can even tell a hybrid civic from a mile away....with the moon caps and smaller wheels. I thin k the prius is a ugly car....the only compliment i have is that they are pretty roomy inside.

the cost of the battery when they fail is well above what your saving in fuel cost... the battery for a hybrid escape is like 3 grand, and those things are only good for like 2-3 years

Every time I see someone driving a diesel Golf or other diesel new(er) car, a tear comes to my eye because I know some people out there have more sense than the Smith's and Jones' driving their Priuses.

Also, I find it funny that these people with long commutes drive a Prius. The Prius gets better gas mileage in non-highway situations dude to the regenerative braking.

i actually saw as how the other day...new toyota batteries supposedly run about 4k but they last as long ast 200,000 miles which really isn't that bad...aftermarket and used batteries are far less. Really not that bad but when you paid so much more for the car in the first place ......

battery powered cars dont save the environment though, haha... the batteries are terrible.
however they are a step in the right direction. to me, they represent a change away from the only option of powering vehicles and thats a good thing. bring on the hydrogen!
and op... you cant compare new car prices with used car prices ;). in that case i could compare a 600 whp mint supra to a new stock wrx or lancer turbo thingamajig.
And yeah, I want a Classic Mini... super fun, very loveable, and sick mileage. Or a newer Golf TDI, or a Mk2 8v or 16v GTI, or a Civic with the smallest slowest motor available.
