http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080811/..._south_ossetia

I was checking my yahoo email and saw all these insane headlines on yahoo news. Its weird, all you see on the news is stupid **** about the Olympics when Russia is Invading another country!

Georgia in Europe, not in the south. If it was the one in the south I wouldnt care.

Excuse me if it came as a bit of a shock, my Grandma spends the summers at a family vineyard in Hungry.

I read a quote from McCain that said when he looked in Puttins eyes all he could see was KGB. Thought that was funny.

Georgia is right near Chechnya and other volatile regions. It borders Turkey to the north and is smack between the Black sea and Caspian Sea.

Besides breaking away from Russia, Georgia has done other things that russia doesn't like. Namely, they are building a pipeline through the country that will enable them to transport oil from the producing countries in SE Asia to Europe. Currently, Russia has a STRANGLEHOLD on this market. They buy oil and sell it in Europe at a HUGE markup. They are pissed that Georgia is going to be cutting into their market and knocking down profits.

I'm not sure, but I think Georgia may have invaded that breakaway region in an attempt to secure the area to allow the pipeline to be built thru it. That region was basically ungoverned, and Georgia wanted to attempt to reign it back in, and then Russia was like, "oh no you don't"....

Also, Russia dislikes Georgia because that is where Stalin was from (i believe stalin, possilby lenin).

So there are many different factors at play here. Basically, that whole area has never been stable since WWII and especially since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Also from what I understand, the breakaway province in question, South Ossetia, does not want to be part of Georgia, the Russians support them in this and had peacekeepers stationed there. Apparently the Russian peacekeepers were attacked, and Russia was also claiming genocide by Georgia in the breakaway province.

CNN
Quote:

The conflict in Georgia began late last week when Tbilisi launched a military incursion into South Ossetia in an effort to rout separatis rebels.

Russia -- which supports the separatists, many of whom claim Russian citizenship -- responded the next day, sending tanks across the border into the province.

There doesent seem to be clear truth coming from either side, ie Russia saying they agreed to the cease-fire but still moving around in a non-breakaway Georgian province, and Georgia crying wolf saying that the Russians kept bombing one of their cities, while a CNN reporter riding with the Russians claiming that as being completely false since he was located right there. I do think both have alterior motives, Russia with thier whole peace but really pipeline and Georgia claiming we are being attacked by big bad Russia, help us western allies, we want to join you while they are trying to stir things up.

Right now it seems Russia is pulling out and leaving or so says CNN. And as long as the matter is dealt with politically then there will be no more lives lost. Regardless of who's truthful and right, Georgia starting anything with Russia will not end well, and they would get Soviet Union'd in a jiffy. Its like a Chihuahua(Georgia) picking a fight with a gopher (South Ossetia) in its yeard, while the gopher is homies with the pitbull(Russia) in the next yard.
