Beginner Camera Question

how is the Nikon D40 for a beginner camera? im looking to start taking pictures of cars, at sporting events, and other stuff, and i was wondering if this is decent beginner camera.

ok thanks. i was just wondering cause right now its going to be a graduation gift from my parents.

Well that will make for a nice gift. The real decision is do you want Nikon or Canon.

x = unnecessary

If you decide to go Canon, my Xti is for sale.

It's a good little camera...my husband bought one for his parents since they had some sort of crappy point and shoot deal. His dad fell instantly in love with it, and was amazed at how fast you can take pics.

grimm 05-21-2008 07:42 PM

have you held either camera in your hands or went thru the menu systems? thats where personal preference will play the largest role. Besides lens selections...

the x just gives you more megapixels. for anything you would be doing, the d40 would be more than enough....unless you plan on making very large prints. in that case get the X

I'm pretty gung-ho about Canon but I got my GF a D40 for Christmas and would def recommend it to a beginner

I actually am trying to get into photography on the side as well.
I recently just bought the new kodak z1012. I'm actually kind of impressed with it. 10mp, 12x zoom, easy to navigate through the menus. HD pics/vids.
Goes for about $300. Only complaint is that it doesn't come with rechargeable battery pack, but you can use AA batteries and it has no case.

Might be something for you to look into. Go try it out at Best Buy. Find out what you like, thats what I did.
