Lenses for D50
 

I am looking for a good everyday lens as of right now. I have the stock 18-55lens that came with my camera, and also have a Tamron 70-300 lens (I was going to get the Nikkor but I got the Tamron for 70 bucks).

I was thinking about getting an 18-70 because I can pick one up for fairly cheap. But than I was thinking about just dishing out the big bucks and picking up an 18-200 Nikkor. Or would anyone say just get a Tamron at that point?

I'm a little stuck, I just want a nice versatile lens that I can use to shoot cars but something that has a little umph so that I can zoom in and see things at a little distance. I hope this makes sense. Any information would be great. And anyones opinion about the Tamron 70-300 lens I have would be great as well. So far it seems to be nice, but would it just be worth it to get a Nikkor or did I get a good buy for 70 bucks?

I think if you want the most versatile lens for nikons, you need the 18-200. The 18-70 is a useless zoom range if you already have a kit lens imo. I have the tamron 70-300 aswell. For that price I would stick with it. It's a bit slow focusing, and doesnt do too well in low light, but eh what can you do for $70.

what do you consider versatile? if you want something better than the 18-70 get the tamron 17-50mm 2.8. ive used it before and loved it.

As Bryan has said before, you get what you pay for in the photography world. The Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 I've been looking at getting for the past year is $900, and it's the less expensive one. So, I don't know what to tell you if it was only $70...

Yeah, the Tamron isn't 12 times worse than the 80-200mm though... maybe 10, but not 12 :-p

As for the original post, I think you'll be happiest with the 18-200mm. The 35mm equivalent of 26-300mm is about as versatile as anyone could ask for... plus a 50mm f1.8 and you've got a cheap, well rounded travel package.

Or you could get a Bigma for a whole lotta "umph", but be prepared to lug it around.

I'm not even trying to be cheap with lenses, I was just pointing out the fact that getting a Tamron 70-300 for 70 bucks was a deal I couldn't pass up. I am really just looking for a nice versatile lens. The 18-200 lens seems like a good option.

I agree, the 18-200mm is a decent lens if you want one lens to do it all. I've heard great things about it and seen some very good photos taken with it. It would be a lot cheaper then going out and buying 3 lenses to do the same thing that this one lens could do.

word. i agree with the 18-200.

but i CANT WAIT for that tokina 11-16mm!

word, thanks for the comments, I guess its the 18-200 lens. I'll put my suspension stuff on hold and pick this up soon I think.

Btw, I'd agree on the 18-200. Personally, I was looking at getting the 12-24 and 80-200 lenses, so 18-200 in one lens is about as versatile as it gets.
