So i got brake checked today....

Id like to know how many people brake check people? Yea i got brake checked today by some tool in a red protege5 wagon. They had like 50 orange tree airfresheners on the rear view. I pulled up next to them at a light, my friend in my car said something to me about the airfreshners, i look over okay thats weird, light turned green and i drove off. I changed lanes(the protege was awhile back) and the guy changes lanes, flys up next to me cuts out in front of me and brake checks me. Is he stupid? It was freaking wet out and what do i deserve to get checked for? Looking at his car? Uggghhh it was dumb i rarely do it to anyone unles they personally attack me. So how many people actually do brake check people and how many do it without a reason?

I don't brake check at all. In fact, I cringe when I have to brake hard that the person behind me might not make it.
However, I had a friend once whose car was beat up and not worth repairing. He would brake check for real. In other words, he didn't just tap to scare you, he waited for you to get close enough so he could nail the brakes and have you total his car. When you're following close enough, you can't discount the deer/dog/cat/child that ran in front of the car while you were rear ending them. Just a warning for those that follow closer than normal...

I brake check all the time. If you're on my ass, I give you a quick one to warn you. If the ass riding continues, they get a slam on the brakes.

x2.

Example: Driving home from Ocean City, Maryland last night from a long weekend with the girlfriend. One of the bridges on 495 was cut down to 1 lane. Nobody ever wants to let a person get in front of them when traffic lanes merge together, so after a few beeps and box-outs to keep me out by this asshole in a Tacoma, I forced my way in front of him. He continued to gun it and slam on the brakes just before tapping my rear end on the bridge. I gave him a few warning taps to get him off my ass, but he kept doing it. So he got a swirvy check. Ya know, the kind where you kinda jerk the wheel like your gonna crash and slam the brakes on. He kinda stayed back after that one. Until we got onto 95 and he tried to pass me like 85 kazillion times.........unsuccessfully.

I do it all the time too if some one is riding my ass they better have better brakes then me and better reaction time then anyone because i don't tap i slam and i hope u can stop. To be honest if you upset me enough u better watch out like if my mother is in the car and someone almost hits me it is really bad and i tend to lose my temper. Same thing with gf's i get pretty heated. When i am alone i let more things slide but if you piss me off watch out. One thing tho i will never do this for no reason i do have to be provoked before i take action.

yea, but what i dont understand is that I didnt do anything to cause someone to brake check me. I looked over at this car and that was it.

You guys must not like the car you drive. There is always the possibility of getting hit and totaling the car. And worse case scenerio, if the other car is stolen or for some reason isn't insured and your policy is liability only, then your SOL.

Even if you get rear-ended and your not at fault and you can get the car fixed the paint is never going to look as good. And if damages are significant then good luck even getting it fixed right. Not to mention the hassle of filing a police report, getting the insurance to check out the car, renting a POS in the meantime, etc. It's just not worth it.

My solution to a bad situation is usually to stick it in 3rd and get out of there.

Easy answer to your question: people are stupid.

My favorite (when I had a stick-shift car) was to put it in a lower gear and fade out the clutch, so my car slowed down without any brake lights going on. That REALLY scared some people. I don't do it anymore though, as it usually just makes people even more mad and they follow closer.

LSHatch 08-16-2005 07:33 PM

Just don't brake check a hunk of ****.

My sister is a pharmacist in Philly and is always complaining about the people on welfare that use the drive-thru in their $50k ride.

Who knows....

I don't brake check unless people ride my bumper. Tailgaters piss me off more than anything. Just because you drive a little sporty car everyone thinks you have to drive 100 mph everywhere and I get tailgated all the time because of it. I don't know if it's that or just because people are ignorant and have no idea how dangerous it is to ride someones bumper at 70 mph. I brake check alot. It's usually flicking my brakes like 5 or 6 times obviously, and then if they don't take the hint I get pissed. Slam them hard for a second, make them wake the fk up. After this there is usually an attempt to weave through the other lane and pass me, at which point I drop a gear and keep them behind me until I get off the highway or until I'm tired of them. Fck tailgaters.

You do know that brake checking isn't a free car anymore right? my mom works for NJ CURE and they've had a handful of claims recently where insurance was denied because the person was too close to the guy. It becomes grey area when you have to decide if the person doing the braking is at fault or rear ending is at fault. its not just a "hey he hit me from behind, i win" anymore.

moorefire 08-17-2005 08:55 AM

I brake check people that tailgate when I've got a car in front me, but only when I'm in my daily beater.

No warning taps, I wait till they're too close and boxed in, then drop the hammer, ABS at full chatter. I love watching commuters panic reactions.

My goal is to get a truck to roll over

Now that you mentioned it I remember a commercial about that.
