New job

I just got a job with Norfolk Southern Railroad Company as a conductor. All I need to do is get my physical, then I go down to Georgia for a few weeks for training. Should be interesting. I'll be working out if the railyard in KoP.

Just the Railroad Retirement thing they have as opposed to social security. At least it's guaranteed.

Coupling cars, uncoupling cars, connecting brake hoses, throwing switches. Keeping track of cars, paperwork, etc. Air brake inspections. There's no computers involved. I want to be an engineer (driver), and this is how you start.

Gotta be 18, GED or HS diploma, willing to travel, work weird shifts, overtime, outdoors. Knack for safety. You have to be drug free (duh). Not too many. It's a good job, but not too many people make it. I'll be working on call for a few years till I get some seniority. Since the baby boomers are retiring, it'll happen quicker than usual.

Good luck in your new adventure. Make sure you get into the horns real good in populated areas. That's what I would do.

I'll be living at home since KoP is close enough. It's about $16 an hour starting out, with a raise every year. It doesn't sound like a lot, but you always work overtime, and overtime there works like this: If you work over 8 hours in a day, regardless of how many hours you work that week, you get overtime pay. So, if you work 2 12 hour shifts one week and thats it, there's 8 hours of overtime even though you didn't work over 40 hours.
