Find noise: Win case of beer: NOISE IS FIXED

So I have this noise. Hardly noticeable at idle, if I blip the throttle (while not in gear) you can hear it wind up and then when the RPM's drop it goes away. Kinda doesn't do it when under load.

I've searched Nasioc for "inlet noise" and "weird noise" and found a bunch of threads with what I think is the same noise but to no conclusions. To be honest it sounds like the ball bearings in the turbo are ****ed but I took it out and no shaft play and it spins nice and smoothly. The noise is coming from the turbo area (or so it seems.) This noise was not occurring until I did turbo inlet, catch can, new front (header) o2 sensor.

I need to figure this out, if you find it I'll buy you a case of beer, your choice (under $30)

Do a boost leak test and spray everything down with soapy water and I bet you find your boost/vac leak?

hypntcpimp 11-28-2007 09:09 PM

throw out bearing?

Vypurr 11-28-2007 09:12 PM

Is the noise a whistle, grind, exhaust leak? What does it sound like? It only happens when you just blip the throttle in neutral? Does it make it while driving?

+1 that's what I was thinking.

Turbo inlet? Is it a metal intake? If so You turbo will make a funny whistle whine noise when you blip the throttle. You here this now because your intake makes the sound reverberate(sp) or echo/amplify it.

I don't think it is the throw out bearing cause that would be if your clutch is depressed and you would prob hear a little chatter as well when you are sitting there. The stock intake hides all the different noises for people who aren't turbo enthusiasts and intake mods get rid of the refinement stock airboxes and pipes try to conceal.

Tight and has new gasket.

I think it's coiming from my TGV's or that area....

Hmm, is it whistling? How is your idle? If you are getting a leak after your MAF sensor you will have a bad idle depending on how much air is getting through.

Well I threw P0102 and P0113 and went and checked out my MAF. The two screws that held the maf into my intake were loose and I guess air was getting around. I tightened them and that went away.

I am however also getting a whistling that i'm not sure if the inlet makes it sound this way or something else.

The noise is driving me freaking crazy though.

Just go back through it and tighten everything and look for unevenly tightened bolts and flanges.

I'll be at the meet tonight for anybody that wants to figure it out.

Sounds like you may be right with the turbo problem. Go rev the car up and turn the key off, good way to see if the turbo is making noise.

malloyboy1 11-29-2007 08:25 PM

find someone what will let you use a lift. put the car up on the lift. have one person listen and the other operate the car.

Vince@R/TTuning 11-29-2007 09:57 PM

this may sound stupid(but u would be suprised what i see) if you plumed your catch can on the vacumn side of pcv(breather) system it will wistle pretty good

teh DIRT 11-30-2007 07:27 AM

I checked it out last night and gave him my diagnosis, hopefully I am wrong. Its not a whistle, its more or a metal shaking/scraping noise in my opinion.
