Backing up hard drive?

Hety guys, is there a program to back up your hard drive instead of burning it on a CD?
If you do let me know, and where i can get a copy. thanks.

like putting it onto another hard drive? you need a second drive, then you copy and paste...

External Hard Drive for the WIn!

drew 09-23-2007 11:46 AM

i don't back anything up, just get a walmart powerstrip and RAID0 ftw

Tru2Blu 09-23-2007 11:51 AM

well the problem is the Hard drive on my moms computer is failing, so she's getting a new one. So my best bet is to get an external hard drive, and back everything up on that? then install the new harddrive onto the comp?

drew 09-23-2007 11:53 AM

well if you're just transfering everything over get the new HDD and you'll be able to transfer, no need for the external

italianblaze 09-23-2007 11:54 AM

Yes Sir that is the best thing
if her hard drive hasn't already failed

Tru2Blu 09-23-2007 11:55 AM

cool, it hasn't failed yet. Thanks for the help guys.

1. Raid 0 is not a substitute for backups
2. You don't need to buy a program (ntbackup.exe is included in windows)
3. You don't necessarily need an external. A cheap internal will work fine if you have the room.
4. Have fun!

Tru2Blu 09-23-2007 12:06 PM

whats the quickest way to transfer all the files over to the new hard drive?

gary 09-23-2007 12:21 PM

Depend what you want to do.

Programs, settings, etc. = backup and restore
Pictures, random files = copy paste

I hope that walmart power strip has magical backup powers because RAID 0 has no fault tollerance! :) Unless you meant RAID 1.

Like others said, another internal hard drive is a good route. If you learn a bit of Windows scripting you could even setup some jobs to automatically backup your files weekly, daily, etc.

Throw in the other drive and NTBACKUP the sucker.

Raven18940 09-23-2007 01:16 PM

If the hard drive is failing like you say, keep the computer off til the new one arrives. Dying drives have a limited life span and once it's up they'll never come back.

i was joking around, no fault tollerance + powerstrip known to surge / have faulty grounds

Well since you already have plenty of suggestions, I'll throw another one out there that I have and personally have used.

Its called Acronis True Image. It will make an image of your entire drive, including all documents and current installed programs. You can put those images on cd(s) then when you get the new drive, run them and they will reinstall everything picture perfect just as it was on the old drive. All your documents, programs, everything...will be there. But it does take a little time to backup.

I know my old MP3 played also worked as an external HD, im not sure if you have an iPod but maybe they work the same way, so you could dump it on there...you could also get an external HD and dump it all on there..pretty much what everyone has said
