He was trying to get the kid to understand the gear ratios, which he did since he knows that 4th is taller(bigger) then 3rd. When you are leaning the basics that's a good way to understand it.

i actually let me friend learn on my civic today..he stalled 2 times and then started driving around. we didnt talk about gear sizes and such

when i learned, i wasn't talked to about gear sizes....it was more pretty much "push the clutch in... ok slowly let it out.., slowly, slowly. " "allright try it again"
