Can the police lawfully force you to "remove" your tint on a stop?
I stopped at Wawa today to pick up food on my lunch break and I noticed a late model Impreza (non WRX or STi) in that off-silver color with dark tint and huge chrome rims (wonder if it's anyone here). Anyway the kid driving the Impreza was yelling at the cop stating, "This is BS, you can't do this- you can't make me pull my tint off right here and right now!"
Now I haven't had tint on any of my cars since my teen years over a decade ago however when I did and was pulled over I was never told to "remove the tint" right there. Granted I always address the officer with respect and courtesy. I'm just curious if the officer was in the right? Is it legal to request them to remove tint on the spot. This is quite a difficult request and can require a heat gun, and over an hour of time- not to mention the terrible sticky residue. On another note I'm getting ready to tint the rear windows of a used car I bought. (ie all windows accept winshield and front driver/passanger windows). Is it legal to go 5% as long as they are the rears? PS I'm in NJ. |
