Carbon Fiber Hood Pins

do i have to have hood pins with a carbon fiber hood? im getting an OEM design style from JSP for my 97 Prelude. ive read that you need them, and than that you dont. so whats up?

whitezenki 03-25-2007 04:22 PM

depends, do you want your hood destroyin your windshield?

Its one of those safety precautions ppl knock as excessive, but ive seen CF hoods go up more than once, so i wouldnt go without it.

AutobahnRacer 03-25-2007 05:42 PM

thats the thing though. will it fly up if its properly latched?

PaleDSM 03-25-2007 05:46 PM

It shouldn't but I have seen it happen a handful of times. Get pins.

The latches can break. They aren't as strong as your stock hood.

AutobahnRacer 03-25-2007 06:10 PM

so what about these?

very low profile which i like.

think these will do it? and think i need anything else?

martang 03-25-2007 11:50 PM

Those should work fine, just don't lose the keys.

Supraholic 03-25-2007 11:56 PM

It really depends on the manufacturer. If done properly, you'll have to break the CF in order for the latch to separete itself from the hood. If you're not sure, then get pins. There's TOO many cheap products out there.

mr_eh 03-26-2007 12:17 AM

well, we can sit here and tell you not to do it, but if the latch breaks and does hit your windsheild none of us are going to suffer as a result of it...

i dont use the hood pins because i really dont think the latch is going to break...

if you dont want your windsheild to break or your roof smashed (seen it happen) then get them...

i dont think those carbon fiber ones are too good tho, it'll look weird imo... just get black ones and throw em on if you feel you need them

whitezenki 03-26-2007 12:21 AM

aerocatch!!!

actually most ppl with them grow to dislike them, but they are subtle yet good looking

AutobahnRacer 03-26-2007 08:12 AM

was looking at aerocatch but these are lower profile

Drftpretty 03-26-2007 07:56 PM

^No they're not. AeroTech is pimp. I have them on my Rx7. Nearly Impossible to install but worth every penny.

I keep one of those Latch keys on my chain for everytime I need to help out a friend who cant seem to find his that he swears was in his glove box.

drew 03-26-2007 09:03 PM

I just ordered some aerocatch pins, the flush ones.. cant wait to install them

AutobahnRacer 03-26-2007 09:18 PM

I had these and I was very unhappy with them. After something like 3 or 4 months the pin underneat that holds the locking part down broke. And the hood began to lift on the side. Get the Aerocatch ones that others are speaking of. I got them. They are great. A little pricey, yes. But when you look at the fact that they are holding down an expensive hood. And if the hood comes up I have seen them crack the windhsheild, dent the roof, crack the hood, and even crack the headlights if glass when the hood comes back down.
The AeroCatch look much better as well. I have had multiple comments.
you can get them at www.deftracing.com
here are the pics of my install
and here is a pic of what I had to drive around like after the other hoodpin broke

I've had my Aerocatch pins for about a year and I love them. Best $100 I've spent:

final question. after the guy cuts out the pieces of CF, will he need to do anytihng special to the raw edges?

whitezenki 03-27-2007 02:54 PM
