Converting Mustang To Mustang Cobra

I sold my car about 6 months ago cause i had a child and now im ready to get in the game again since i will be divorced in about two months now. So I am interested in saving some money and buying an 04 mustang gt and putting a supercharger on it instead of spending the extra dough for a cobra. What I started this thread for was to find out if there were any mustang or ford experts who could help me in the right direction of this project, I need to know what all i need to do to a mustang gt so i can safely put a nice powerfull supercharger on it. I was told by someone that screwtype that sits on the top lasts longer and gets more power. If anyone could help me i would greatly appreciate it and sorry if i confused anyone with my rambling.

my advice to you would be to go to some of the new mustang forums and read up on it.

i was interested in this car awhile back and found alot of great info from visiting those forums

I dunno man....maybe you should look for a 2005 Mustang GT instead....I think that's a much better starting point for your project......

Its gonna be cheaper and you'll be better off just buying a 03+ cobra, it'll be less hassle man

how will it be cheaper?

evomike 02-04-2007 02:58 PM

blowers arent cheap plus all the supporting mods then tuning, plus all the driveline componentd arent made to handle that power. so when its all said and done you could have bought a cibra had a way better car, but will be stuck with a blown gt

Intercooled T 02-04-2007 02:59 PM

Well, these are my calculations:

04 Mustang GT, Excellent Shape $15k
+ Supercharger $5000 (including supporting modifications, FPR, Injectors, etc)
So around $20k for this mustang, probably a little more though, but thats about right

04 Mustang Cobra GT, Excellent Shape, $24k

Now, your setup will be a little cheaper, but the Cobra has the blower from the factory, is actually pretty reliable when driven normally and dealers/shops are more likely to work on a car that is not as modified as yours may be after the conversion

but what do I know, I'd rather spend a little more for something that is long-term made to last with the blower setup

[edit] forgot to mention, I shoulda said it before, but I meant 'cheaper' in the long-term sense. plus you have higher re-sale value

I was thinking the same thing in terms of price.

And Intercooled T already stated the reliability factor (and resale is a very good point.)

I’d spend the few extra grand and get the real deal.

buy a cobra..besides all the other bull**** and headaches you will avoid and end up spending too much money its gonna hold the value 10x better.

I would bet the cost of converting a GT to a Cobra is similar to converting a WRX to a WRX STi

My buddy did what your talking about doing. Just go buy a cobra, Hes faster then a cobra but spent a lot more money doing it and still isnt finished. Once stuff starts breaking you will understand. One thing will lead to another in the GT and you will end up spending a good bit of money more then a cobra. The reliability and out of the box performance is enough to make you spend a little more money up front to get the cobra.

I also remember reading about a certain TST member who owned a 2005 GT (I think it was an 05), Supercharged it and blew the block in less than a month......

Thanks everyone for the advice buying a cobra would be a lot easier, also i was told tonight that the 99- 2000 cobra years they had the 302 in it and were the most powerfull cobras anyone know if this is true?

evomike 02-06-2007 12:32 AM

they havent been a 302 since 95 and most powerful is 04 they seem to make a bit more power than 03 for whatever reason

evomike 02-06-2007 12:34 AM

99-00 Cobras were the 4.6L quad-cam motors WITHOUT superchargers.

Broken5hift 02-06-2007 10:59 AM

you'd only want an 03-04 cobra if you want a supercharger

ProfessorCustomz 02-13-2007 01:26 AM

Anyone know where i can get an 03 - 04 Mustang Cobra that wasnt abused by the owner for sale??????
