I don't think calling it a fad is fair, depending on who you are of course. To those people that thought it was cool, tried it, realized they sucked and maybe wrecked their car. They might not like it and think of it as a passing fad. Either you jumped on the bandwagon, tried it, and decided to not get serious about it or instead got good, became obsessed, and started competing in events, etc. There are also people like me who were interested in it before it got popular, and were dediated to the sport long before it became mainstream here in the US. I have japanese drifting clips from the 80's. Over there, those guys were drifting all those 80's cars right after those cars went into production. So I don't think calling something that has been around for over 20 years a fad is correct. And most people who can't wait for it to die either tried it, sucked at it, and thought it was stupid or did not give it a chance at all and thought it was retarded without even realizing how much skill is involved. Personally I respect all forms of racing. Sure, me and my friends make fun of NASCAR and I don't really like drag racing but at least I realize that there is a certain level of skill that goes into every motorsport and I respect those people for doing what they like to do.
Just my 02 cents.
To Evo8kid. I don't know what you are talking about but that was defenitely considered drifting. You know, like when you go out to a parking lot and practice drifting. Now if this was like a video of him just doing huge smokey doughnuts, then I would call it messing around.
And DN_Sileighty, just keep it up, looks like you have a cool spot to mess around. I like how you set up the cones. Hell, come down to our oval and practice all day for free. My friend never drifted before and he got good after coming here 3 times.
