Intake on an STI?

I've been debating whether or not to put an intake on the STI, some people
have said i dont need it and its bad and others say its good. I was wondering
why from both angles. I mean its a fairly cheap mod, and I already have my DP
just haven't installed it yet, waiting for the money to by the catback. But by
christmas I'm planning on turboback exhaust w/ AP and street tuner, so would
an intake be something i should go with for that set up?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just don't know all my subaru stuff yet...

Power gains will be minimal if anything. Some intakes will mess with your MAF readings. STi owners like the K+N Typhoon intake, and claim it does add a bit of power although some would disagree. Others like the Cobb or the SPT intakes as well.
Any intake is mostly going to be for sound though really, especially with a TMIC and/or stock turbo.
But after all that if you are still interested I do have a K+N Typhoon in my garage that I should have listed for sale already. Looking to get $175 for it.

The only intake i would buy for an sti is a k&n typhoon. Alot of people have had sucess with them, i also hear the cobb is great as is the spt. Personally i would spend 50 bucks and get a k&n panel filter and a silencer delete and you will be good. I don't think its worth the money.

not even if i'm gonna be doing the AP and whatnot? dont' u have one barry?

S4toSTI 11-06-2006 09:24 PM

I have a filter and a silencer delete.

reeksti 11-06-2006 09:24 PM

i've had the K&n typhoon and im not impressed and "felt" i lost power, IMo its a waist of money, i've read that stis like cai not sri, b/c the sri is sucking in hot air and it doesnt really do anything. Best bet is to get a cai, APS ftw.

S4toSTI 11-06-2006 09:26 PM

Ok bill not to say that you shouldn't get a cai butttt if you do the word bitch slap comes to mind.

CarbonIS 11-06-2006 09:29 PM

haha alright, i have a k&n filter on with the bottom of the box off right now so i guess i'll stick with that.

Now, what about a BOV?

lol, i made hte same mistake, when i first bout my sti, i put a bov. u dont need a bov on stock boost, if you're getting a bov for sound get a intake

S4toSTI 11-06-2006 09:31 PM

Get the silencer delete. http://www.jscspeed.com/wrx/intake/g...ntakeelbow.htm

S4toSTI 11-06-2006 09:32 PM

You can get a bov if you want, i wouldn't but i do have one so i can't say don't too much.

CarbonIS 11-06-2006 09:33 PM

i was only gonna get the bov when i start to run higher boost with the AP and street tuner.

S4toSTI 11-06-2006 09:34 PM

I say don't get an ap.

How come no one is mentioning the obvious? SPT intake is great and extensive testing by COBB tuning has shown that on the STI and WRX (but not the Legacy GT, though) that the SPT intake is at least equal to if not better than the stock airbox. I'm running a SPT intake, GFB BOV on 100% vent with a catless TBE (using COBB AP), Perrin LW pulley and a LW flywheel with no problems at all.
