No cat $10,000 fine, and car impounded?

That's just what my local performance shop told me, and there's a reward for people who turn in those running without a cat.

I guess you should be extremely carefull then asking for shops who will pass me for inspection w/ no cat, as they could just turn you in and make money.

Anybody know how legit this really is? I'm highly considering selling my 3" Apexi Downpipe (Cat Eliminator) and buying some type of Downpipe that wil allow me to run a high flow cat.. or just chopping mine so I can put in a cat.

Anybody know of any brand downpipes that have room for a cat or test pipe on a DSM?

And also, if I have a few CEL's on, and I disable the checks for them via DSMlink, could I pass inspection as I won't have a CEL on?

Thanks

a friend of mine had a CEL light and had to get inspected, so we took the LED light out from his dash and managed.....he failed emissions though, not that, go figure

I've hear of this but....

How do you plan on getting cought? NJ police officers with the exception of state troopers are not state certified with inspection, meaning they cannot do anything.

Not to mention, a shop would never call you in, that's retarted. If you want to be sneeky, get a cat heat shield and weld it onto your test pipe. There you go, problem solved and now it will look like you have a visable cat.

If the reward is 10 dollars a person I could be a billionaire! lol

thats actually a really good idea, I know a lot of people who have done this and get away with it.

Most likely if a cop stops you they wont have nearly enough car knowledge to check for a converter. Most cops dont even know what kind of car I drive because its debadged.

I've heard of some cops checking under the car via mirror or by getting down themselves and looking. I've heard quite a few stories of cops down the shore doing this. My buddy with an Evo got pulled over for not putting his turn signal on early enough before switching lanes at 2AM with no one on the road... and the cop got down and checked for a cat. He only had a catback so he was safe.

The fine is 5-10k and your car will be impounded. I believe it is actually a federal offense... that could be false though.

unless that cop was a state trooper he is not certified to do inspection. like dimitri said, nj police with the exception of state troopers can not inspect your car.

if that was the case someone would just say " go on tristate tuners"

yea i got pulled over in my friends wrx, and they said they pulled me over bc his exhaust was to loud, then the cop acually got down and looked, then turned to the owner of the car, and asked if he had a cat. thankfully the officer only gave a warning...

What if you were pulled over in jersey but the car is registered out of state?

So did you admit that it was catless?
I always assumed I could get away with telling the officer there's a cat in the uppipe:lol: If he was willing to go through all that to physically see whether or not it was true, at least he would've worked for it.

when and if you get pulled over. please turn your hazards on and turn the motor off. Also be polite and hands on the wheel. They will have no reason to check for it...And don't give them any reason to tax you on something they didn't stop you for, in the first place.

In 2000, when i had my integra i got stopped once and he looked under for it. Unfortunately, he was not a skinny fellow, and honda's lowered are extremely low for them to even look under. You have to lay flat down to even see anything.

the fine is like $3000-10K the more offenses.

acidbyte7 11-27-2006 12:35 PM

alright i didn't feel like reading everything so i might be repeating some stuff, the fine is 5k-10k for your first time, the second time is 30days possible jail with and auto 10k fine. nj state police are the only ones that can issue the tickets. D the heat shield plan does not work they don't really use the mirrors anymore because now they have infrared temp. guns they hit the "cat" with the cat is supposed to be a lot Higher temp than the rest of the exhaust. if its the same temp with but does have heat shields than they know there is no cat. yes this is a federal offence. but heres the trick, if you have PA plates and are in NJ withno cats, and the state trooper sees this there is nothing he can do because they are not allowed to give equipment tickets to out of staters because in parts of PA with less population in the towns cats are not nessecary. and yes it is a federal offence. the only fake cat you can get away with is the meghan racing cat, its a straight through pipe with cat material around it, so the material heats up but there is no restrictions in the exhaust

yeah i got pulled over once in NJ and i am registered in pa. the cop pulled me over because he thought i was dealing drugs at the rockaway mall. where i sold a tranny and he was asking if was a drug dealer. the next thing he did was look under my car to see if i had a cat. and he said i don't see a cat there my friend. i had to open my hood to show him that the cat was in the very front of my motor. then he tried some bs about my exhaust was illegal. i had to show him where dc had the cali emmission tag on it. and then i asked him why are you even checking my car i am not a NJ res. he told me. once you cross the over that bridge you are driving in NJ which makes you a temp. NJ res while you are in the state. he never gave me a ticket but that should answer your question. i think :)

TurboTagTeam 12-09-2006 01:03 AM

My FD passed emmisions with a full 4in exhaust with no cat and no resonater

Shri2222 12-09-2006 01:50 AM

I have no Cat, My exhaust has a Resinator where the cat should be.
Do state troopers cary any infa red guns in the cars? Anything to really worry about... My inspection is upto date and the car isn't too loud.
