Has anyone ever had this problem?

So for the past 3 days I've had this metal on metal grating sound.
As usual with WRXs, I've looked it up on NASIOC and found 3 possible problems. I've yet to try any of them due to work and classes.

Problem:

On right turns and sometimes while goin straight there is a metal on metal grating sound. it happens on right turns at all speeds.

Possible causes:

1. Brake dust shield hitting rotor.

2. Brake pad clip is caught and causing the noise.

3. Wheel bearing is goin bad.

i have the same problem, it started about 4 days ago.

I have a sound that sounds kind of like that. Its almost like a rattling/squeaking sound, I think it might be the springs or something. I can hear it when i go over bumps or sometimes when the car is just idling it vibrates enough that it just sqeaks a little...its like something is rattling.

JET02WRX told me he was having a very similar problem... and has taken everything apart multiple times and still not found a solution.

So my dad and his automotive-mechanically inclined friend took it out while I was at work.

He said it was the brake wear indicator....so apparently I need brakes.
So the WRX is parked til I can get that done. And I'll be runnin around in the Maxima.

Yeah I have this same problem too. Definately all due respect to your dad and his buddy, but did he mean he thinks you just need breaks, or that the indicator is damaged. I would think if it was truely your brakes it would be making that sound all the time regarless of direction of travel? Unless of course its damaged, then I could see it making noise only sometimes. Did you look at your pads? Can you see if there is pad left? If your brakes are worn, it would be evident. I have been searching for a solution to this problem for over a year with no results. I have had everything apart on my right rear all the way down to the bearings. I repacked them and no dice. Not only that, the sound keeps getting louder! There is no evidence of wear on either side of my rotor, brake pads have 80% pad left. Dust shield isn't rubbing. I'm at a loss. Let us know if your wear indicator was your problem though.... I hope at least one of gets a solution that works for them! :(

Don't worry.
When it comes to cars, I'm more likely to respect my dad's friend's diagnosis rather than my dad's.
At least he built a '57 Belair from the ground up.

Sweet. We had a restored 57 Belair when I was a kid. It was mom's daily driver!

Let us know about your noise though! I think I may take my right rear assembly apart again and this time, remove the dust shield completely...just to elimate the possibility.

Yea. I'm gonna do that too this coming weekend when I have the spare time.

So anyways....pick up the WRX today at 5.

Noise is gone.

Akebono Ceramic pads are on it and I skipped class tonight and started the proper wear in procedure.
Couldn't get my old pads or their diagnosis on it.
Personally, I don't like the shop my dad uses for service. I just get a bad vibe while I'm there.
Amusingly, they are right next door to JPR Performance (great rotary people i'm told).

I'll keep you guys posted as the pads wear in.

Sweet....hope everything is OK
