Exedy Lightweight flywheel with stock clutch; 2004 STi
Has anyone ran on a stock Subaru, a lightened exedy or ACT flywheel with a stock or stage 1 clutch? Any thoughts on the change in rev quickness, any other problems or concerns you had at first? Or does anyone run that setup now that i can ride in your car to see first hand? Trying to decide if i just want to replace the flywheel with a factory piece or go lighter. Its right out of the STI pamphlet at the service counter. I found one for cheap. Thanks for any input.

IMO its only worth getting a LWFW if your running a big turbo that spools up above 5k and you need to keep the RPMs up. Like if your running Auto-x. or ?drifting?
On a Suby you have AWD and the lack of rotational mass in a LWFW will cause a loss of initial TQ to the drive line. Also its way harder to launch/take off fast with a LWFW. Most guys who run 1/4 mile in a Subaru will tell you they prefer the stock or heaver FW. What do you want to do or accomplish with LWFW or is is a $$$ saving attempt only. . . . |

I think either way you'll be fine. You have a turbo'd subaru so it's not like a lightened flywheel is going to net you some sort of crazy gain. I personally liked the faster drop in revs with the lightened flywheel opposed to the stock one. Just a preference for me. You know what a stock flywheel is capable of so if you're unsure then I'd stick with what you know.

I would recommend keeping the stock fw. I have a lwfw in my LGT. It makes starting from a standstill tricky and it's noisy on decel. It's eagerness to rev from a stop will contribute to faster clutch wear if you aren't careful.
On the flip side, it makes rev matching a joy. You'll feel like the stig when you get it right. |
Im a pro at rev matching with the stock one, so i guess i'd be just as good.....now i really dont know lol

I'm partially curious how a lightweight flywheel behaves. I'll be replacing my clutch soon and I was thinking about replacing my flywheel too. They only make one and it's ~13lbs. The stock wheel is 30lbs, other than quicker revving up and down, how is this going to impact me?
