why is my setup not loud?

so i recently purchased my friends turbo xs 4" downpipe and Invidia N1 race catback

those were the only mods done to his sti it was pretty loud. the N1 race catback is loud to begin with.
but when i put it all on my bugeye it is not loud at all. i also have a friend running a different downpipe and same catback on his wrx and his car is louder then mine.

why could this set up not be as loud on my car? im so confused by it. the whole reason i purchased this set up was because i wanted it to be loud.

the only mods different that i have is an invidia up pipe.

i doubt this has anything to do with it but ill throw it out there. on his car he cracked piston 4 and there was oil sludge in the downpipe and midpipe. we tried to was it out but im sure there is still a little in there i doubt this has anything to do with how loud the car is.

downpipe and midpipe

instead of buying the other part of the turbo xs downpipe they added more pipe and a flex pipe

why is this god damn exhaust not loud? it has zero cats and no resonator.

maybe your muffler bearings are bad

well the STi is gunna have a bigger turbo and better flowing heads/intake/intercooler etc so I would imagine it would be louder to begin with.

Not sure why there would be much of a noise difference, my friend's invidia catback/downpipe/up pipe is pretty noisy.

Also it's hard to tell what you're opinion of loud is when you don't have sound clips of each.

I'll make a sound clip and you guys yell me unfortunately I don't have one of his

A bigger turbo is going to be louder. Was the other guy running a header? Call me crazy, but a good tune will change the sound of a car too.

Reds82 04-24-2012 12:12 PM

Uppipe still stock?

jpalamar 04-24-2012 12:20 PM

Your not an STi.

davin 04-24-2012 12:30 PM

XS and Invidia are crap brands and that extended pipe looks like crap too. I am sure if you went with a 4" Ti turbo-back exhaust with an open wastegate, high boost, meth and running badass AFRs, you would be bitchin' loud.

i have an invidia uppipe.

Subaruwrxst! 04-24-2012 01:42 PM

maybe its clogged. possibly, somebody tempered with it before you got it? good luck...

Supraru 04-25-2012 09:28 PM

I had a pretty decent change in rumble going from the 2.0 to 2.5. Can't say it was really obvious but I knew the difference. Also with my cousins supra and sti with their 4" pipes sometimes they were oddly quiet but they can easily get damn loud. Hard to explain. If you want you can have my blitz and I'll take the invidia catback. I'm sure that would be loud. lol

05suby 04-25-2012 11:27 PM

im his other friend he is talking about. i have the same setup on my wrx and its a lot louder than his and might have been louder than the sti. i was stock turbo, completely catless, perrin uppipe, helix downpipe and the invidia n1 race exhaust.

+1.

I noticed the same thing after my tune.

Maybe the muffler is clogged with that oil gunk?

Are you both tuned?

The easy answer to your problem is to resell it and get a blitz nur spec if you want a silly loud exhaust.

05suby 04-26-2012 04:43 PM

yea i was tuned with my old motor.

Slasher 04-27-2012 11:49 AM

be stealthy. stealthy is better for avoiding cops, dusting someone at a light, and drive by shootings....
embrace your quietness.

noise doesnt make it faster or make anymore power

This is really weird. My bugeye is quite loud. So was my last one and on both I had (the same) 3" Invidia turbo-back.
Here's a pic of it right below yours.

I'm not an expert by far, and really I'm asking as opposed to suggesting... but would the (albeit subtle) variance in size/texture of piping dampen the sound with the non-STI motor?
I don't know if that affects the sound vs one that's a smooth, consistent 3" all the way through. But it's the only thing I can think of based on what I notice when comparing them side by side...

I've never heard a Subaru with an aftermarket exhaust that wasn't loud... EXCEPT for the one I just bought- which has headers (my old one didn't) and a home-made split tailpipe exhaust made of different-sized piping. I hated the sound (and look) of it so we put my 3" Invidia turbo-back on and it was like night and day.

Thats a nice bottle neck they put it there just after the DP. Get that DP to Cat Back transition cleaned up and the same ID as the rest of the Cat Back.....also that flex section is narrower then the pipe ID bump up a 1/4" in ID on the flex.

Ej6Mike 05-10-2012 03:34 PM

Smaller motor too. 2.5 vs 2.0. Also, stock header/uppipe will keep things tame. Keep it quiet though. Thats why i opted for an SPT exhaust.... i can barely hear any rumble and it remains sleeper.

psymos 05-11-2012 02:38 PM

how does it compare to this?

(keep in mind this is a fast idle (~1500) also fully built motor and ported heads with headers)

also +1 to everyone who said about it being different motor
