Replacing 2nd gear
Hey I'm pretty sure I blew 2nd gear, and I just want to make sure i'm ordering the correct part from Honda. Any feedback would be nice.
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...RSHAFT+%281%29 "23432-PCY-336 005 001 GEAR SET, COUNTERSHAFT SECOND" looks like what I need correct? 2005 s2000 is my reference vehicle. thanks. |
I would really suggest seeing what you broke before you start buying parts. What exactly is the issue?

Well I was casually driving home at 2am. It was pretty cold out so I didn't let the car fully warm up. When shifting normally I heard a loud bang. I don't remember if it was from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. I can shift into every other gear fine except for 2nd. When driving it sounds like a bag of bolts is bouncing around in my trans. When the clutch is held in, the sound goes away. I drove home, just skipping 2nd, and everything else seemed and felt fine. Haven't driven it since. Even if it is just the synchro, I can't buy it alone, I have to buy the entire gear-set. I doubt it's my clutch delay valve. So what else is there really? I can pull the trans at my buddy's place, but I don't have the means or the skill to pull it all apart and check it out. I guess I could always just pull it and take it to a trans place and be like "Fix it" but I don't trust any shop really. I would rather buy the gear myself, pull the trans myself, then take it to a place so I know exactly what's going in my trans. I've done a lot of research on it and I've read a bunch of very similar situations which resulted in a broken 2nd gear. What do you think?

Don't just replace the 1 part that broke. Def get a rebuild kit. It isn't much extra work while you are already in there anyway and they usually aren't too expensive. Since something broke and is floating around in there I wouldn't drive it. Any shards in there could do more damage to other parts. At the least... change the fluid right now to drain as much metal out as possible if your going to milk it until fixing.
If it was a syncro you should still be able to get it into gear, just essentially double clutch it(I killed a synchro in my DSM, I literally found it in the botton of the trans when I pulled the cover off). Car was driverable but lots of shards in the fluid when I drained. A week later I found out why it broke, my trans leaked the fluid so I was driving it bone dry. |
rebuild kit is 1700, the tools to rebuild it myself are 1100. new trans is 4000. used trans is 1500 or more. replacing 2nd gear is 300+ labor. replacing 2nd is a common thing people with boosted s2k's do, i just want to make sure the part is correct.
|
Yeah that is the correct part, I just wanted to know if you blew the synchro or literally destroyed the gear. If you stripped the gear you'll need both counter and main.

The only problem now is that I don't see a 2nd gear set listed in the mainshaft options. reference page below: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...NSHAFT+%281%29 |

If it's a common problem with the S2k's why put the stock ish back in?

SHO, there really aren't a whole lot of aftermarket options regarding stronger synchro sets... |

because the ap2 trans's already have carbon synchros. Also, The only way to get a stronger trans in my car is if i buy the custom TT supra trans swap fullrace is currently mocking up for 6k without install. I could also buy the PPG gear for 10k without install as well. Or i could just swap out the gear for a few hundred + that much in labor. yea my options suck.

Finally got it down to the track, I was pushing around 22 psi, spinning through first, had to shift into second at around 20 mph, and breaking up at the top of second, and spinning a bit in third, i got a 12.2 with a 1.7 60'. I picked up a set of rx7 wheels, need to get a set of hoosiers, and upgrade to dsmlink v3. After i get it tuned for 30 psi, I'm thinking 10's next spring.
On a side note, i picked up a L92, which is basically a detuned LS3. Gotta find something cool to put it in tho. |
