DSM 14b Horsepower & 1/4 Mile Records...

So I'm a member over on tooners (aka DSMTuners.com), and I've been reading the 14b (stock turbo) thread there about chasing Joe Bucci's (current 1/4 mile record holder) record on the stock turbo (10.84 if I recall). Last night a buddy and I where talking about putting together a budget car to go after the record. Here's a link to the discussion about it on DSMTuners if anyone is interested, it's quite lengthy (60 pages with 1,777 posts as of this writing).

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drag...on-thread.html

The horsepower record on the 14b (from the research I've done) is 324whp, for a turbo rated (from the factory in 1990) at 190hp, that's pretty darn impressive.

With all that said, there is rumor yours truly (and a buddy, to remain unannounced till he is in it for sure), may take a crack at the record(s).

I'm new hear, and so I know I don't have any "groupies" if you will, but I'd like to be known for something other then being another random person that postes here on TST. Feel free to post your thoughts.

any compressor maps in existence for that turbo?

TalonTsi97 05-16-2011 09:38 AM

A old head DSM'r i kno has been doing work on the 14b for years, and if i remember rite has def made around maybe a little more on the dyno with one. He currently has a new 14b car together to handle some business but hasnt gotten it on a dyno or track yet. Expect to see these records change quickly if it does.

Have you ever seen the Galant with the hot-pipe setup 14b? He was going for tens, but I think he sold the car.

A guy from Rochester beat it last year and ran a 10.6. He is friends with emery at STM. He might have boughten that guys car.

Compressor map's I'll have to search for. 14b's are supposed to flow right around 30 lbs / min though.

Rules are completely stock turbo (housings, wheels, internals, etc.) Also, must be on a 1g DSM or Galant VR4, and 4g63 motor. No nitrous (that is a totally different record, because you could just run 2 stages @ 300hp worth of NOS).

Never saw a non nitrous 10.6 14b car before. Joe has had the record for 7 years (almost to the day I think actually). Do you have a link?

^ that video is of an EVO. Maybe you somehow misunderstood, I'm looking at the 14b record (stock turbo on the 1st gen. Talon, Eclipse's, Lasers, and Galant VR4's). I watched it twice and saw nothing about a DSM in there anywhere. Not being mean, just saying, perhaps you posted the wrong link?

zmainiac 05-16-2011 09:37 PM

Oh sorry, I thought that they were all paired together. It was a nice time anyways. The first gens should be lighter.

e85_4g63 05-16-2011 10:23 PM

The first gen DSM's are lighter (FWD turbo) then an EVO. Problem is the stock EVO turbo (EVO 16g) has flown enough air to produce 400+ AWHP numbers with almost matching torque. Not to hard to get a 400awhp 2,500 lb. (realistically could weigh) car into the 10's. Accomplishing that same feet with 2/3's of the power on the other hand, takes some thought and trial & error... (just my opinion)

2500??? It would be a tin can.

When your going after a record, you have to go big or go home!

e85_4g63 05-18-2011 09:37 AM

Hey guys (and gal's) just an update on this. Looks like there are some others that are pretty serious about this record. There are about 5 people that are planning (and have some pretty nasty setups) gunning for the record this year. On that note, I've decided to try for another record attempt for now. Looks like a spoke a little too soon, should have done some more research first.

Find it hard to believe the "record" is 324 whp.. I made 319 whp on my 14b in like 2004? with not too many mods. No engine work at all, 130k mile stock motor.

haha your one of the guys i thought of when i read the post. There was a few local guys killing it on the 14b over the years, and like i said one of those guys just built a new setup that i can guarantee will make more then that one he hits the dyno.

(mills84) The number I was quoting (324awhp) was on a Mustang dyno. Mustang dyno's, according to all the dyno bench racers, would come out to 370awhp, give or take. Somehow MD's are 10 to 15% lower reading then a Dyno Jet? Did you do 319 AWD or FWD? What Dyno? What correction factor?

Sorry, what I meant to say was that 324awhp on a Mustang dyno, should come out to about 370awhp on a Dyno Jet dyno. I think faster then I type

I had a 14b record for a galant back in like 1998.. It was a mere 12.9 at the time haha.. Just a 3 inch exhaust, mbc, and C16 with a boost gauge:)

Damn.. nice! It seems like the 14b record is a little to much (time wise) for me to commit to. Basically, I don't have time to load the car on the trailer, and drive an hour away, it's just not enough seat time for me to set a 14b record this year. I'm still going to do something revolving around the 4g63 platform, just not the 14b record right now. Nice times with the GVR4!
