NJ Inspections.

Ok guys wondering who has taken an OBDI car to get inspected recently in NJ? I have been rolling around with a 4 year expired sticker been thinking about getting it inspected because I have been getting too many damn tickets for it lately I guess the state is trying to squeeze out every dollar they can but thats a different issue that I don't want to discuss in this thread.

I heard they do the tail pipe test for OBDI but what else do they check? I just want to make sure I have all my bases covered.

Also do you get better emissions if you have the car is idling rich or lean?

I just ordered a replacement catalytic converter because mine is old and worn out. I just want to make my car run emissions friendly because I have lately become very conscientious about the environment.

Thanks for any help!

When you are running rich you'll produce more hydrocarbons. However, if you run lean you'll produce more NOx. Either way you really can't win. You should be fine with just putting the replacement cat on.

The only thing they checked emissions related on my Miata was the tail pipe and gas cap.

^ agreed. art im trying to get a cat welded on my truck. if you guys are doing it at the house ill throw alex some money and we can hold hands and pray together while we go through inspection haha

That's all they did for me last month. No more safety inspection, just emissions.

I had two 1994 civics I through inspection with ease:

1. Remove the CEL/SRS/ABS bulbs. There is no computerized diagnostic equipment in the car to tell the inspector what's wrong, if the lights are off (or missing) they won't notice.
2. Make sure your idle is low and not wavy. They will refuse to do the sniffer and fail you.
3. The safety inspection is merely visual...if it looks like there's airbags and your tires are good, odds are you'll pass.

Good luck.

When did you take the civics? my idle isnt wavy but its loppy since i have 272s.

Most inspection will check if the MIL lights up when you turn the key on. Removing the bulb is a easy way for a quick failure.

Ok guys, atempt number 1 to pass NJ inspections failed miserably in typical DSM fashion, the inspector was unable to drive my ACT2900 car so he stalled hard, twice. the second time the car wouldnt start back up because those 1000CCs flood my **** out quick. They had to push my car out and put a rejected sticker on it.

Car was sooooo flooded that it would only crank once and then stop. :( I was getting a little worried thinking that something catastrophic had happened.

My question is can I go back tomorrow and flip a bitch and have them just push the car threw instead of attempting to drive it? So I dont have to walk a half mile home again. BTW I went back an hour - hour and half later and car started right up.

DaBombDiggidy 05-11-2011 03:14 PM

for insurance reasons man i doubt it. tell them to get a guy who can drive your car before anyone else touches it. its not your fault they cant drive with a hard clutch. BTW :) we went to the same place... we are so cute

when i was waiting to be inspected some milf was telling me how much she loved my truck. i like to play mad libbs so my thinking added penis into some nouns of her sentences. (i love your truck how long have you had it) < you change this to > (i love your penis how long have you had it) her intent was definatly not to make a positive comment on my POS faded ass truck. why am i shy... fail :( & win!

Way to dam hard to pass inspection in NJ and I have a standalone and custom wiring harness so I am just saying screw it, I am not even trying any more lol. I don't have tints and I don't give cops a reason to pull me over, so I should be good. I wish we just had a sniff test.

how is it hard? where have you been? there is only the sniffer test now... we went from one of the worst (excluding CA) to maybe the easiest. If its OBD1 you need to pass a sniffer test, if its OBDII you need to pass all emissions diagnostics besides 2-3 im not sure. thats all, i had an ABS and Brake light on in the truck

and alex i made it easier to read lol and madd libbs was that game where they gave you a paragraph and tell you to put in random nouns and verbs to make it, or attempt to make it, funny. ;)

i took my talon there once... after he stalled it with only an act 2600, and since i had no cat/evap/egr i failed the visual inspection immediately. i just went to the local sonoco and met someone who helped me get a legit sticker, kind of expensive but cheaper then putting all the emissions stuff back on

Do you drive down Haddonfield rd towards the pennsauken cc on a regular basis? I usually see a car similar to yours once every couple weeks.

I have all that stuff deleted except the Cat, i actually bought one and put it back on, since I have multiple vehicles with 3inch exhaust it was going to get way too expensive to pay for inspection stickers for like 5 cars. I heard all you have to pass is the sniffer test, i might bump my idle to 1500rpm tomorrow and go for round 2.

Yes I drive down that way 5 times a week to get to work in philly. I'm either in a galant Vr-4 or my talon, rarely in my 3000GT.

That's just it I am obd2 with a standalone. If obd2 had the sniffer test also I would pass.

Ej6Mike 05-12-2011 02:31 PM

I went through NJ inspection last week.

2001 forester
Lowered 4.5 inches on WRX suspension swap
Headerback exhaust with no resonator
highflow Cat which throws a MIL for cat defficiency now and then.
Bright HIDs top and bottom with external rally lights on the bumper.

You know what happened? I went thru, listened to by boxer rumble destroy the warehouse and 60 seconds later i was back in my car with a new sticker.
NJ inspection is a joke now. All they check is emmisions. That is it.

I dont see you ever having any issues. As long as you have a cat, thats all that counts. Nothing else matters anymore. NJ is so broke this is all they can afford to fund these places to do anymore.

blackvr4 05-12-2011 02:43 PM

ur obd2 buddy so u get no sniffer they just visiually check to see if u have a cat or somethign that resembles a cat on the car and no CEL. OBd1 u get sniffer, which makes it more complicated especially when the car thats getting tested is WAYYYYY beyond stock..

ohhh i misread my bad. still though you cant expect to be in a car built to a point of having a stand alone ecu and want to pass legally lol
