i rock one, cheap cobra with a Wilson magnet roof mount.

comes in major handy on the highway. truckers always call out cops ;). i use channel 19

wheresmycar 10-22-2010 11:12 AM

How much was yours and where?

RedBowTies88 10-22-2010 11:16 AM

well mine is the cheap cobra they sell at walmart, i like it cause it fits conveniently in the cubby in my dash, but im going to upgrade son to something more powerful.

radio was 35 i think? maybe another 40-50 tops for lines and antenna mount and. i used to rock i dual antenna setup but found out quick thats only for rigs becuase if thy arent far enough apart they dont get reception for crap.

if you live near any truck stops like a pilot or whatever thats the place to go for parts/ radios

I was thinking about getting one... how long do the antennas have to be, and don;t you need to get a special license plate to have one? I always see guys with the "Amateur Radio" plates... will the cops harass me if I don't have that?

i could be wrong but i think if anything those plates would be for HAM. and its not that cops that can bug you for anything its the FCC but that rarely happens.

antennas dont need to be crazy long, depends on how high your car is and everything. there's actually formulas to use to pick the correct height/tuning

You don't need a license for a CB.. This is the radio we picked up..

http://radioproshop.com/unidencb/images/PRO510XL.jpg

Got it for under $40.. paid $30 for a 5ft antenna, egg roof mount and coax cable.

antenna looks like this but its a different brand..

We mainly got them from when we go 4X4-ing because the last time we went to the pine barrens we got lost for an hour and every time we came to a turn we had to stop and get out and discuss which way to go.. sooo this will be a lot easier.. Plus they are pretty cool.. The first night I used it I reached a guy in Baltimore.

i suggest for anyone wanting to get a setup talk to a friend or store owner/employee about whats right for you. its not as simple as it looks there's a lot of tech involved in picking (and optimizing) the best radio and antenna combo. sure you can buy whatever plug it in and slap it on your roof but its not really gonna be working even close to its potential
