title transfer for dirtbike???
 

i just sold a dirtbike "honda xr80" to a guy and just handed him the title that was handed to me when i got it. he calls me today and says if he ever wants to sell it in the future he wont be able to because the title is not in his name. i told him that because it is not a street registered vehicle that doesn't matter and that no one will ever care. Because as long as u have the title from the original owner that is proof in itself that the bike is not stolen.
he disagrees with me. who is right

Its really grey area. My advise, never buy anything without a title because its has potential to be a PITA down the road. I would walk away. I went through hell with my bike. I learned from experience and am an expert now lol

I don't know why people are dumb enough to hand a title over without doing a proper transfer in the first place. Does he even have a bill of sale proving he bought it?

no its a cheap dirtbike for 800 bucks.

I know its a dirtbike. Its still the same concept since it is a titled vehicle.

anything with a title needs to be legally transferred. both of my dirtbikes have the title in my name. it's extremely hard to sell ANYTHING with a title if your name isn't on it.

i buy stuff like this all the time, but i would never sell something without transferring it. and im pretty sure you can register a dirt bike but you just cant drive it on the street. BUT, if he gets caught riding it on the street and its not in his name, hes never getting it back.

You can't register sonething that you don't own.

i grew up racin bikes....sold plenty of bikes. since we bought them new we'd provide the bill of sale and title.
1) make a copy of title
2) make him sign and fill out title
3) make another copy
4) give him the bike, title and bill of sale and receive cash.

we did have a quad for the pits and we had to get a notary to sign that though....
but just have him sign it and keep yourself a copy

PA doesnt require a title for dirtbikes or ATV's. Over the past 10 years ive gone through about 8-12 bikes, and Ive never put the title in my name for any of them. Bill of sale is all thats required in PA, and thats all I ever ask for. Ive gotten the titles with a few bikes, but never put them in my name- its a waste of money to switch it over.

If the guy has that big of an issue, have him bring the title back, you can sign it, and send him on his way.

im pretty sure quads are different though...cause of the age requirements for certain ccs.

He has the title, that's "good enough", but get him a bill of sale also.

If he wants you to sign it, what's the big deal? You're supposed to do this anyway (not that it's going to stop him from selling in the future, but if you were the transferee on the title from the original transfer, your name is there, and there would be a gap that might not go unnoticed).

You are obviously wrong in the "nobody will ever care" statement, because he cares. He is obviously wrong because most of us (including myself) would buy the bike, title unsigned.

Just sign the damn thing and end the drama.

you cant just sign the title without being in front of a notary. this isn't new jersey lol.

fact is, if the title is in the previous owners name, the guy that has the bike now is behind 2 8 balls unless you are friends with or are still in touch with whoever YOU bought it from.

dirtbike or not, you should have gotten the title transferred when you bought it. because now, even if you went to the notary, you cant transfer the title. they're going to check your ids so just signing someone elses name wont work. And more so, you need a written and signed bill of sale that says he bought it for $800. because when you transfer the title, you have to pay fees on that amount.

not entirely true. while that is that law, if you go to a tag place that also has a dealer license it can be done. think about when you trade a car in, you just sign the title and they take it. no notary. i have been using the same tag place for years for and have never brought the owner of the car with me.

if im not mistaken, car dealerships have notary licenses.

but hey, Im not saying it cant be done the way you are saying it. just putting out what i know :)

That's what I mean. The place I use is a tag place, but they possess a dealer license. Its kind of a loophole I guess. Legally they shouldn't do it, but technically they can't be punished if they get caught? I don't know, all I know is I've used them for 20+ transfers into my name with no issues.

This again. To add some info... must of the time when you buy/trade a car in to a dealer, you sign a power of attorney as well so they can complete the transaction.
