Car smoking like a champ! HELP!

Before I start this story the car is a 2003 Lancer OZ rally Sport 4g94 SOHC. I do not know much about Mitsu's but I do know my way around an engine

My wife came home yesterday saying something bout her car smoking to the point of not seeing the car behind her as well as loss of power (this happens during acceleration she said). I pulled the dipstick and there is almost no oil in the car ( day after oil change). So, I checked all exterior points for oil leakage including oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket and found NO external oil leakage. That did not surprise me because she thought it was coming from the rear of the car.

I went from there and did a compression test on the engine thinking there was piston or valve problems. I found if I remember correctly 185 ish across all 4 cylinders. I dont know what these cars are supposed to be at but sounded good to me especially since they were all the same.

At this point I was a little stumped so i decided to throw some oil in it and run it on a local road near our garage. After 100ft the car was DUMPING smoke like I have never seen. Smoke was bluish white very much so an oil leak somewhere. I would more call it an oil dump then a leak though.

I was able to get this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18oVO2bwKsI. The pure amount of oil loss and how is was very consistent makes me think the oil is getting in prior to the cylinder. Maybe the intake manifold somewhere?

I do not know much about this engine and need some help figuring out where this oil could be coming from. I'll be heading back up to my garage soon to check intake manifold see if there is any oil in there ( coming into system through vaccuum line?)

Even if you fix this problem that motor took a beating from being driven without oil. I wouldn't even fix it, I'd replace it.

How many miles does the car have? Did you did the timing service and all that jazz?

I went into this expecting the motor to be fried. I am at the point of trying to figure out what happened that caused this.

So far only ideas I have are PCV valve, and Im not sure with a bad PCV valve if it would drop that much oil in the engine too.

I would think the PVC valve failing would make the car idle really bad but can def lead to burning oil. I doubt it would be something instantanious though with burning that much oil.

Was the PVC hose messed up at all? Also check the breather and make sure it isn't clogged.

They are less then $10 at Pep Boys(I got a Purolator) for my DSM when I was doing a restore. It didn't need one but I did it just to cover all things under the hood.

IM heading back to the garage to check out the PCV valve now that I have done some research. The car was idling bad the day before this happened but now the idle is fine but blows smoke.

Car has 58k on it btw....

I honestly would say the head gasket. I own a lancer as well and after boosting it I popped the head gasket. Now I understand your situation is not the same, but it exhibits all the same symptoms mine did. Car idled fine, drove fine, and hell even the temp gauge said the car was not overheating, but the car so smoked a lot like yours. There was no visual leaks on the outside and when we pulled the head off a nice section of the head gasket was missing. I hope this is not the case for you, but just some food for thought. Motors for this car are pretty easy to come by you can pick them up used for around $400-$600. A buddy of mine replaced the motor in his lancer after an accident. I will see if I can get the number to the place he picked his up from.

Only thing wrong with the whole head gasket idea....#1 doesnt smell sweet like burning coolant. #2 blue ish tint def. oil

Mine did not have a coolant burning smell to it either and I was also burning oil as well. A head gasket going does not always mean you are going to get coolant in the cylinder.

Do a leakdown test...

Just because the car holds compression doesn't mean that it's not leaking. I know that sounds weird, but trust me on that one.

i agree with the last post 100%

Yeah and you dont need to be loosing coolant to have a had gasket failure. The break in the gasket could be between the oil passage and combustion chamber.

Did you check the valve guide seals?
