Help me figure out whats wrong
Hey everyone, today as I was driving home from work (on the PA Turnpike) i noticed my steering wheel starting to shake a little and an odd knocking noise, at first I thought maybe I had flat tire so I pulled over to check, nope. So I go off at the next exit to give it a better look without cars wizzing by at 75 mph.
The knocking does not happen if I am accelerating or braking semi-hard but if I am maintaining a speed then it does, the faster I'm going the faster the knocking. Transmission fluid all over the place in the engine bay. But I pulled the dipstick and it didn't look low. If anyone knows what might be wrong with it help would be greatly appreciated because I'm supposed to go up to visit my buddy at Bloomsberg this weekend but if I can't figure out what's wrong I won't be making the trip. |
Sounds like an axle to me
|
Jack that bad boy up and take a look. Lots of suspension parts/bushings under there.
Also make sure your wheels are properly torqued. |

How do you know something is leaking? Are you leaving puddles or what? Sound like it could definately be an axle, which would explain why it's making that sound at speed.
|
not leaving puddles that I noticed today but there is fluid all over in the engine bay. so something was leaking at some point least
|
Did you check the trans fluid properly(assuming your an auto since you have a dipstick)? Can must be running and at operating temp to get an accurate read.
So far it has me thinking axle too. |
it is leaving a puddle in my driveway about to jack it up and see if anything looks out of place
I did check it while it was running and was hot. And yes it's an auto/Sportronic |
check your lug nuts.

my car does the same thing around 75+ mph. starts to shake and when i engine brake the car moves side to side. also happened when i was on the highway. was going about 70 around a long left turn. car started to shake from left to right, not like a little shake but like someone trying to shove it off the road. if you have the same problem as me i think it can be a tie rod or a wheel bearing. and i have no tools to jack up my car to check for wheel play :<

Problems seems to have stopped. Although I will have to do something about the leaking tans fluid. Thanks everybody.
Mod please lock |
problems like that just don't go away, figure it out soon before you regret ignoring it
|
my buddy matt and I will take a look at it for free if you're willing to come down to his house in Chalfont. Let me know
|
dont lock it, the problem just isnt gonna go away haha.....i had a dirtbike, and we rebuilt the top end, like 2 weeks into it it ran hard but leaked a lotta oil and fouled plugs...we changed jets everything. then it stopped and the thing ripped....an hour into that practice day the top end went agian :( lifes not that easy
|
it sounds like something really bad in the suspension, like wheelbearing, balljoint, maybe tie rod, or a wheel loose. an axle would vibrate during deceleration and if bad enough during braking
|
It sounds like you have an axel problem.
|
no, their is no way that is the axle. check your lugs. you can wiggle your wheel up and down, and left to right. does it make noise then?
|
Sorry guys when I said the problem is gone it's because it was the lugs, tightened them up took it for a nice little drive and we're all good now. I feel stupid now though that I didn't even think to check them at first.
Trans fluid is still leaking though. gotta take care of that today |
i had the exact same problem and felt like a complete idiot as well. silly loose lug nuts.
