Sensors above Roadway?

Sorry if this has been covered but I was wondering if anyone knew what the purpose of these were? I saw road crews installing them a few weeks ago on 476 and 95. They look to be about every mile or so and it looks to be 2 flat sensors mounted on a pole sitting above the roadway. Is it a traffic monitoring system: radar system etc? Tried google and didnt come up with anything and nothing came up from searching Tri-state.

It think they're gonna start speed trapping people and sending tickets in the mail... at least that's what they're gonna do for the TP now...

my company has something like that set up in parts of NJ and NYC. Maybe someone is doing the same thing for PA too. The ones that we have up basically show speeds of the traffic on that roadway. (Not for ticket purpases, but for roadway speeds).
You can look on the map on this site and see what I mean. The different colors show the speeds the roadway is moving at.
http://www.511nj.org/trafficmap.aspx
if you look on the left there is a key for the colors on the map.
Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the sensors (antennas as we call them) but they are usually located above the roadway on existing sign structures and there is above each lane.

Of course the conspiracy nuts jump to conclusions about a remote ticketing system.

there would have to be cameras set up... so if you think they are for tickets look for camera polls with flashes on em not hard to spot.

Just stating what I heard...

Even if they were "speed traps," at this point they at least need to warn you about them with signage. That's the case with the speed photos anyway...

Because if you believe this technology exist and is used anywhere else in the world your a nut.

Give me a break and pull the cock out of your mouth.

Of course here in the good ole USA we have guns to blow those things away should they start using them so I wouldn't worry to much about it.

This.

Navteq (and previously traffic.com in the Philadelphia region) sets up sensors along the highways to monitor traffic and congestion. They then sell that and other mapping information to other companies, you can see on mostly any map service online "Powered by Navteq" or something like that. Even the one that this guy link has some kind of Navteq data (probably just the map). I think the only online maps that don't use Navteq is google (they used to be are now doing it internally).

I'm not sure if this will work, but here is an example:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...08.65,,0,-8.26

That sensor measures congestion and is then sent to Navteq.

Didnt they say it was unconstitutional to have a remote ticketing system? I thought I remembered hearing that. I would think that if they legally could do that, they would have by now. The govt needs money as badly as anyone, and issuing tickets remotely would be pretty easy for them. Especially with Ezpass its incredibly easy to figure out someones average speed based on their two gate times.

To lazy to type it up myself but this, too.

The company I work for makes traffic data monitoring/recording hardware also but for a much smaller scale. Their system may work of a similar Doppler radar that we use.

This is truely easy money for 'the man'. I'm shocked that hasn't been put into effect.

unless there is visual proof, a ticket like that won't hold. Anyone could be driving your car and speeding. no proof, no ticket

How can you guys be so blind and stupid? These things have nothing to do with traffic speeds. Obama had these brainwashing lasers installed all around the country do to the up and coming elections, its all connected. What I'm personally doing (besides being a member of the Tea party) is wrapping my cars headliner in tin foil. It actually works very well, Tin foil has special properties that will reflect the gamma rays so that we can keep our thoughts, yell REALLY loud, and take over the Country w/ our logical thinking.

Be safe out there guys!

DriftCrash 09-24-2010 05:43 PM

I find that tin foil under the carpet works well for these sensors(seeing as they are in the ground)

but Proven has a good idea too I never thought of the headliner
