1999 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS "Project:Silverback"

http://www.fquick.com/images/vehicle...3137326070.jpg

Let me introduce you to Project:Silverback. It's a 1999 Subaru 2.5 RS 2 door 5 speed.
Originally this car was purchased about a month ago by my buddy's girlfriend. The more I looked it over and heard my buddy talk about RSs over the years I started thinking I needed one of these. Long story short this car was purchased for $1000 with a salvage title and a right rear quarter hit. The car is super clean and rust free. We drove it up onto the trailer. Car is complete, runs and drives perfect. After a couple weeks Lisa (my buddy's girlfreind - member on here) decided she really didn't want to deal with the salvage title after finding a really clean 1998 2.5 RS 2 door 5 speed in NJ. She got a smoking deal on it, bought it, and longer story short the silver '99 RS is now mine. My buddy Jesse located a quarter-cut, clean used bumper, and a tail light for it. Right now it's at the body shop more than likely with the old dented rear quarter section already cut out. I will post in-the-process pics as I get them of all the work being done getting the body repaired and repainted.
Jimmy, the guy doing the body work, somehow just so happened to have a beautiful set of anthracite 17x7 OZ P1 Prodrive wheels sitting in his garage collecting dust! One wheel has just 2 small scuffs on a spoke..really minor. I think I'm going to have the wheels powdercoated satin/matte black though. I like more contrast. Scooped those wheels right up for $500!
Currently the only mod on the whole car is a WRX cat back exhaust that doesn't really bolt up quite right. I have plans to replace that soon though.
I'm not new to the import scene having owned a super clean black 1990 Si hatch that he and I swapped a JDM twin cam engine in. I lowered it, bolted up some lightweight wheels and tires and drove the snot out of it for 2 years. Fun car. Those that know me though know that I've been a diehard 5.0 Mustang guy for years...still am. This subie will replace my modified '88 GT daily driver. I long for better fuel mileage and even better handling. I still have my '85 Mustang Notchback drag car and will keep that for when I need to remember what it's like to lay down 11s in the quater mile. I'm more of a car guy than anything. I appreciate all types of transportation as long as I am able to modify it to go faster!
I've owned this car now for a little over 2 months and have probably put only about 15 miles on it just to get it moved from my previous residence to my current one. Luckily I had access to a dealer plate. I'm still finishing up just a couple pieces of trim, getting windshield replaced, need to figure replace evap. canister to get rid of engine code, and then put my wheels, and suspension on. Then just get it inspected and registered. Trying to take my time with it so that when I get it on the road it will be ready with no issues. Listed below shows my current mods/investment as well as future mods. There's a link below that to my current journal on the RS forums showing everything from day 1 to today and a link to my FQuick pages with many more pics. I will post a few pics to summarize my Subaru journey below but for more pics and info before today please see my 2 links.

Thought these were a steal at $500. Couple scuffs in the paint but no rash and all 4 center caps were perfect. The anthracite didn't pop enough for me against the silver so I had them powdercoated satin black by Bonehead Performance. They did a nice job...

Primed and painted the center caps myself and they match perfect

Wrapped the fresh rims with a new set of Yokohama S.Drives 215/45-17

For now I have a new set of Megan coilovers. See how they like 'em. I really wanted Tiens but since my budget on the car went a little over on the paint I settled for these. I've heard mixed reviews but hey they're pretty nice for $890 new.

Very nice job cleaning/fixing it up.. I'm jealous you got new paint and no rust!! (im getting it on the rear quarters).

Keep us updated.. and I think future plans should be a swap!

Although the raptor SC are nice w/ the intercooler set up they have.

Thanks guys, I have big plans for this car but for now I hope to have it registered and on the road within the next 2 weeks.

TROLL 09-04-2010 10:00 PM

great work, and really well documented!
do you do body work and paint yourself or are you having someone do that for you?
pretty awesome, i love gc8's... i'd love to find a cheap impreza wagon for a daily...

JohnnyGMachine 09-05-2010 04:12 PM

I paid to have the bodywork done as it was pretty extensive. I also don't paint cars so again I paid to have it done. I sold my 88 GT for a good amount of money so I had the budget to do all the work and mods I wanted since I picked this car up for so cheap initially. This spring I plan on picking up a fresh low mileage 2.5 and bolting up a Raptor Supercharger and putting that in the engine bay.

where do you see a blob eye??

btw the project looks good so far.. ditch the supercharger idea and just swap it.. you'll be much much happier in the end

TROLL 09-06-2010 11:16 AM

yup, if you're putting money into engine stuff might as well swap it!

I wanted to do the turbo swap but once i added up all the costs for doing it and seeing the high percentage of failer rate other 2.5 RS guys were having on the rs25.com forums I decided to go the blower route. $2200 for a complete bolt on kit! 240 hp! The RS would be lighter and faster than an 02+ WRX. Works for me. That's with only 5.1 lbs. of boost and no intercooler. Heck I could spend less than $3500 to get a new/used engine with about 25k-30k miles on it and a new complete Raptor Supercharger kit and my buddy and me could install it all probably in a weekend. The Version 4 swap complete front clip is gonna be about $4k plus you have to buy a piggyback computer setup...another $1000, plus do the wiring harness which i can have done at a local subie shop for another $700. And you don't know what you're getting with a used JDM STi engine. So I think the blower idea will suit me better plus this is more of a daily driver and if I want big power I'll roll out my 85 Mustang notchback drag car with front wheel lifting 351 cubes of raw power. Just want a little more grunt for my RS.
