Tail light tint question

How dark can i go on my tail lights in terms of spray tint? I'm spraying my lights this weekend and I'm not sure how dark I should go. What is considered ok?

No tint is legal. It obstructs the light output from the tail light.

If you're going to mess around with it, at least get some of the tinted laminix or clear-guard films so you can remove them if you run into any trouble. that will be a lot less than having to buy new lights because you painted yours.

I put a very light coat on mine, it looks almost blue, and you can still see the light thru it pretty good. But as stated above, any tint is illegal...

I saw it last night. I kinda want to go a bit darker

Tinting them is illegal... but I've had mine on for over a year and haven't been bothered once. Same with my windows.

They look more of a matte finish. Did you clear them afterwards?

jpalamar 10-08-2010 12:03 PM

I cleared them but only did a light polish. I didn't want a high gloss finish. Your white will look really good with a gloss look thuogh.

I'll probably put 2 coats of clear for extra durability and to add a really gloss look

Do what I was gonna do, mask off aorund where the bulb is, and tint the rest... I think it would look pretty sweet.

Eh I don't think it would look good. On the 09 chargers it looks good because they have two indents where the bulbs are. Most people tint or paint around It for that style

jesse096 10-08-2010 01:14 PM

Oh yours doesn't have them? I thought it did...

No mine is an 08. They changed the design in 09. A buddy of mine on here has a brilliant black 09 charger r/t and he had his painted to match the car. His has the exposed bulbs and clear reverse light cuz that's how he had it painted

Yea his name is tim. Were members of a Mopar club so we usually go to a lot of shows together. His car is really nicely done

Big_Jim 10-08-2010 01:48 PM

mike, if you're hell bent on having them painted/smoked, i'd suggest taking them to a body shop. they can mix a couple drops of black paint with clear coat and smoke them that way. It will give you the best look too.

I just don't have the money to spend on getting them done at a shop. Plus, I'd like to be able to say I did it myself. It feels better to take pride for doing something yourself versus paying someone to do it for u

Big_Jim 10-08-2010 02:01 PM

I fully agree with you, which is why i've done every mod on my car myself (from hids to leather to airride) but it will get to a point where the quality of the spray from VHT and a novice hand spraying the tint may wind up being more expensive than paying for a professional to do it.

Nothing against you, I just dont want to see you have a set of tail lights ruined because of uneven coats, or blotchyness. at that point you're spending more money to replace your lights.
