my FMIC is BURNT??

5 Attachment(s)
ok, so this sunday i put on my greddy ti-c catback, my helix testpipe and my hks downpipe to finally make my turbo back exhaust. car is so much faster, it lights all 4's (in the rain anyway) lol, only thing it's a little rough on idle, as usual whenever the A/F ratios are being played with.

now here's the thing. i had to drive 250 miles to school monday morning, so i was just going to wait to get a tune, hopefully from petey, this weekend. after about 100 miles the check engine light came on. even tho i have an o2 stimulator i just assumed it was something with that, and didn't worry about it. and i have a slow leak from a loose bolt that i'm fixing this weekend. i was definatley getting on my car, even redlining it a little on sunday after it went on too. today, after i got gas, i backed in my car as usual and as i walked away from it, i turned around to admire my car and the perfect park job and i spot some brown stuff on the front mount intercooler. i'm like what the hell is that? i get closer and notice it's two little brown spots in the middle, maybe 2 inches in diameter. i'm puzzled as to what it could be. i thought maybe it could have been my intercooler sprayer possibly getting sprayed on it, and it was too hot so it just burnt and discolored the FMIC? but then i realized my intercooler sprayer is off to the right, and the burnt marks are in the center. i have no idea.

help! do i need a new fmic? do i just need a tune? should i drive it as easy and less as possible until it gets tuned? i can't check the code until i get home either, otherwise i would have already.

i probably need a new fmic, feel free to pm me on offers too.

thanks

yes i know, my car is dirty - during the week i'm at johnstown where it snows every god damn day, it's clean on the weekends.

Take some pics of it! It could just be anti freeze or something? What kind of fmic is it?

i'm gonna take pics of it now and throw them up here - it's the stock fmic.

Honest_Bob 02-24-2009 04:26 PM

Are the spots oily? Do they wipe off?

Pictures!!

maybe someone threw a cigar our their window and it went onto your IC and put a little burn mark on it?

the4g63 02-24-2009 04:41 PM

Its just dirt or bug guts.

zerioustt 02-24-2009 04:46 PM

judging by how disgusting your car is i would say to wash it...

also why would you beat on a car that isnt tuned and needs some things tightened and or fixed?

lol, I actually didn't even realize bluebyu was a girl.
Anyway, to be helpful, the problem will be solved by washing your car.

peteyturbo 02-24-2009 04:52 PM

it's either dirt, or you have 2 holes in your FMIC.. I am leaning towards dirt.. But a boost leak test will tell for sure. BTW a perrin FMIC would look very nice in there, ank anyone who got the peteyturbo special on one of them.. They are my fav bolt on intercooler:)

alwaysinboost 02-24-2009 04:53 PM

its oil or dirt or something... wash it and it will be fine again.
But if you really want to upgrade your IC i have a nice bar and plate AMS style FMIC I'll sell ya on the cheap!

yeah i know it's disgusting, but everything here is just brown slush and the roads are always wet, and it's supposed to snow tonight here in johnstown so theres no point. but thanks. and yes i was serious lol, my fiance was going thru the gears with it like there was no tomorrow, so when i ask if i should drive it carefully, i really mean if i should just not let him drive it till it's tuned. i figured as much tho. i'll see what it is this weekend.

For the most part, the factory fuel maps are actually more conservative (safer) then the "tuned" maps. The gains that come from getting tuned, actually come from tuning the car more aggressively then stock.

So you should be just fine with the car the way it is.
If your having any idle issues, its probably from a loose intercooler clamp or something along those lines (u mentioned something needing to be tightened).

Hope that helps.

dsmtuner 02-24-2009 05:08 PM

Don't beat on it if it's not tuned. Don't let some one else beat on it if it's not tuned.

I forgot to mention that I took a HUGE steamy load on your FMIC. My bad.

R_Rambo 02-24-2009 05:17 PM

^HAHAHA

just clean your car just having an aftermarket exhaust doesnt mean ****

ha and i can even spin my n/a impreza in the rain

OutToWinPAHC 02-24-2009 06:44 PM

Washthat thing. I would clean it with some good cleaner degreaser and see if it comes off. Looks like something got on there and kinda baked on. See if it clean off, then get the little bolt issue fixed and have her tuned right.

01civicsi 02-25-2009 12:14 AM

lol "burnt" fmic ... haa. clean that car!

Steph, I honestly like you and all, but you are 85% of DSMers and about 98% of all other kids that I've met that know nothing about their cars except they go fast. There is a reason for CELs; Leaks and redlining don't mix; And yeah, if you know that your car is currently a little under the weather, you should probably quit "living your life a quarter mile at a time." I say this slightly in jest, but mostly in truth. If you want the power and the responsibilty that comes with owning a car like this, you should probably start familiarizing yourself with the basics, like, CEL= "Hey, that hurts, or at least I think that hurts, I need to get checked out before I need a heart transplant" -your car.
