Getting angry with job hunting....

UPDATE: I freaking found a job haha...

My grandmother rents to a manager at a warehouse near me. I'm going to be a"Picker" (whatever the F that is haha) for $13/hr....not great but it's money until i find a job in my field. It's 15 mins away. In the mean time i'm still going to look for graphic design jobs.

Turbo_CitrusEs 09-16-2009 11:17 PM

I will find out tomorrow if the walgreens distribution center out by kutztown is still hiring. It's a bit of a hike, but it's a job.

Ciotti 09-16-2009 11:21 PM

I feel your pain brother, my girlfriend graduated from Seton Hall last year with a degree in graphic design and hasn't been able to find anything in well over a year now. She's not applying to anything and everything but she has still yet to get even a single call back, it's ridiculous.

tomustang 09-16-2009 11:28 PM

Good luck finding a job around here

Pig STi 09-16-2009 11:30 PM

^^ thanks...i for kicks even applied for the new Steel Ice Rink's skate guard position and haven't heard back even after i emailed back asking if it was still available lol. I used to ice skate when it was the cool thing to do before we could drive haha

Pig STi 09-16-2009 11:31 PM

thanks dxman, i sent out resumes to them all!

tomustang 09-16-2009 11:41 PM

Yeah I would say the worst thing is the 'overqualified' reaction. If you can dumb your resume down

for the (time being till i find a good job) places like target and walmart, i could take out my most current jobs on the resume and add in the places i worked at before i was out of school like Dicks and Giant Foods and Circuit City...maybe you're right....

Pig STi 09-16-2009 11:51 PM

i wish i could get into SW&B in Bethlehem (advertising firm). I know a girl on here works for them and i could maybe get some pull (drives a black RS subaru, i forget her username)...i walked in twice already but they aren't hiring.

I wish PENDOT would hire too, i would love to make money holding a f'n stop sign...

Good idea, i'm going back to northampton cc in spring for 2 more classes in web design (if i cannot find something by then) so i have a dual degree in print and web.

RSX Type-Slow 09-17-2009 12:50 AM

i was in your boat until this week. i got a job at a car dealership washing cars but i knew the service manager. I was an electrician, but i have had to look outside my career path to find work. I've had quite a few of the "overqualified" inteviews. I HATE when your expecting a callback but it never happens so you call and call and call and send both email and fax resumes again to a potential employer only to find the position has been filled days ago. ugh.

In the past 8 months (how long i've been unemployed) i've come to reaize it's not WHAT you know, it's WHO you know. For real.

Pig STi 09-17-2009 08:32 AM

i wouldn't mind washing or detailing cars....i do it all the time with 4 cars lol.

BustedUjoint 09-17-2009 08:37 AM

The market sucks out there. My dad has been out of work for close to a year. I believe he had 2 interviews. It sucks. He is in Sales and has looked as "low" as a Burger King Manager. . .NOTHING. I would probably be in the same boat if I didn't know someone looking for an IT person around the same time I was laid off. Good luck man. The winter is coming. Have you though about looking at some of the Mountains to see if they are hiring at all? I am not sure how close you are to any of them though. Just an idea.

Pig STi 09-17-2009 08:55 AM

i live like 45 mins from Blue Mountain

HickRocket1258 09-17-2009 09:14 AM

Hang in there. As much as you don't want to hear this, it's going to get worse before it gets better. I graduated in December, took 5 months before I found something and now on my 2nd job in the last 4 months actually. As RSX said it's who you know during the day and age, degree doesn't seem to matter anymore.

That's not too bad. I would do it for the cash and the benefits. . if you snowboard or ski at least.

keff108 09-17-2009 10:30 AM

Its a shame how bad it is out there. I just got laid off friday. Im a union steamfitter but its something that happens to my trade alot. Lucky my family owns a trucking company where I can fall back on. Good luck out there and if I see or know of anything Ill let you know.

Professional networking to meet people in your field is definitely your best course of action to get a job. I got laid off 6 months ago and every interview I've gotten since then has come from people I've met at networking events, professional groups etc... Sites like linkedin help also.

jpalamar 09-17-2009 04:28 PM

My brother would hire you. Hes the manager at 5 Below in DE. I know he is understanffed.

Pig STi 09-17-2009 05:07 PM

Schepis 09-17-2009 05:57 PM

Sweet whats the name of the company, and where in NJ?

importpower99 09-17-2009 09:00 PM

I feel your pain bro, I'm in the same boat. I have been on 5 interviews. I have even applied to mcdonalds, yes thats right I did.

I have a B.S in Criminal Justice, but my background is in sales (5 years). I Was employed my HSBC, until april. I have my insurance sales license's but I refuse to go down that path. I was called by Aflac, New York life, Combined, Prudential and State farm.
I think I'm going to take my college off my resume and get a factory job somewhere.
I am so bored!

I'm actually at the warehouse in Quakertown. I drive & deliver. The pay is excellent, but you have to be willing to work your ass off day in and day out. But as far as Allentown/Quakertown stores are concerned, they have various openings available such as Salesperson, Customer Service, etc..

Hell most factories aren't even hiring, and if they were they want the most experienced worker with their related background

Pig STi 09-17-2009 10:27 PM

I'm gonna hit up Allied tomorrow. They might be able to help me out. My gf's mother was hired by Nestle through them.

matthenny 09-18-2009 03:57 AM

dont fret
UPS IS ALWAYS HIRING
lol
(i will never do that job again if i had to)

92dxman 09-18-2009 09:08 AM

The company I work for is looking for a few people in the area. It involves packing out lumber at Home Depot in a few locations on a route and there are a few open routes in the area. If anyone is interested, pm me some contact info with a phone number, address and email address and i'll forward it to my manager.

Pig STi 09-19-2009 03:20 PM

evomike 09-19-2009 03:41 PM

Pig STi 09-19-2009 03:57 PM

congrats^^^ at least i found something for the time being until i can get a job in my field. Now it's time to check NYC bus trips so i can propose to my gf haha. I had to wait till i found a job because i didn't want to feel like a loser proposing lol. Prolly mid/end of october!

lownslow95 09-19-2009 04:00 PM

At least you found a job. I'm still hunting, waiting for people to call me back, if they ever do.

Pig STi 09-19-2009 04:02 PM

all i can say is keep pounding the pavement man, don't give up...If you get unemployment yet, if i were you i;d go to a place you want to work for and say "i'll work for free for a week for you so you can see what i have to offer to your company" see what they say/how it goes then...you're technically getting paid anyways from unemployment...

Does she live in NYC or are you going to take her up to do the proposal?
