late boost 2002 wrx
 

can anyone help iam gettin a late boost on my 2002 wrx...just got it like two weeks a go and it doesn't boost till 4500 rpms..why and does anyone know how to fix it....people keep telling me different things..i know there is someone out there that has run into this problem that and the intermittent check engine light is driving me nuts HELP:eek:

Have you done a boost leak check? 1st thing anyone should do on a turbo car w/ boost issues

1. Check all fittings, make sure they are tight.
2. Inspect hoses to make sure there no holes or tears.
3. Grab a can of carb cleaner and spray it around the engine bay. If your RPMS go up, you sir, have a leak.

Boost leak test will find any and all leaks, breaks, holes, tears, or loose "fittings" in a fraction of the time.

The carb cleaner trick doesnt always work anyway...some leaks are only present when there is positve pressure rather then vacuum pressure.

so if you are at a dead stop and floor it, you only start making boost at 4500rpm?

My IC to throttle body hose blew off once, Ryan (area1320) found+fixed it inside 15 minutes. Maybe check there?

no no the boost gauge says its making boost but you dont feel it to 4500

my MPA IS .1 THATS ABOUT 14 AND A HALF PSI BUT IT DONT HIT THAT TILL ABOUT 4500 RPMS

I had the same problem in my 03 after putting my up-pipe on... i would get SUPER lag even though the boost gauge read i was boosting... But it wasnt random.. it was from the gasket heating up and expanding and leaking. Id check all ur gaskets around ur turbo and exhaust

so..ughhh...how about that boost leak test?

I had a similar issue with my 02 9non stock). I suggest

1. Find out what code the car is throwing with that CEL. It may point you in the right direction.
2. boost leak tester - you can make one for <$10 in parts
3. Check for boost leaks - Each time I did this I hear no leaks. The second time I also sprayed soapy water on all my couplings and found a few small bubbly leaks from various places.
4. Check your wastegate - this was my problem. I was not hitting my target boost (22psi) at all in any gear. After I determined no major leak, I disconnected the WG line and was able to hit 22psi by 3900 rpm in 3rd gear. Just make sure you watch the boost gauge / romraider screen so that you do not end up overboosting too much.

when i got the car the dude had the wast gate and the rec unhooked the car was gettin good boost in first to second second to third would feel like someone rear ended me now i know that was over boost and it would do the same thing fourth to fifth..i cant find the damn wast gate vacuum diaphragm anywhere but fred beens and those guys over there are idiots..couldnt help me with out the last eight of my vin wtf was that gonna tell them...i been in this business since i was 19 and if someone had a question about a part i never asked for there vin unless they didnt know what they were driven and man its sad to say theres alot of people that cant tell you what kinda car they drive but they know the color

wastegate and recirc unhooked? With all that overboosting maybe your turbo is shot? everybody can keep guessing but without a boost leak test or data to help with i cant see anybody solving it on the internet.

P.S. you have been doing this since you were 19 mind me asking how old you are now? 19.5?

Hey blazed, I think we spoke on the blvd the other day near red lion rd. I was in the white wrx.
I would take the car to one of two places.
1) where you bought it
2) someone reliable to tune it correctly.
either way, take your air filter off, plug up your intake, use an air line to one of your vac. lines and listen for an air leak. This may be your only problem. If not, I would still take it to someone who does know more about turbo cars. I am not trying to put your knowledge of autos down, but your car needs something if it isn't getting a smooth power curve.
as previously stated it could be many things or a simple little thing.

And yes, at some point we are all a$$holes on some forum out there, doesn't mean you have to read into it. Just take the car apart and help us help you.

1st thing i would check is to make sure that the car infact has factory lines t'd from the turbo, waste gate and bcs. then confirm that you feel a restrictor pill in there.

Step 2 if the car has a tmic make sure the connection between the ypipe and the turbo are tight.


Step 3 check the connection between throttle body and tmic


after reading your thread again seems like someone messed with the hoses from the turbo to wastegate, i bet they are not stock and i bet there is no restirctor in there.

yeah EACH IT that was me i think imma take it down to north philly to this Spanish guy who knows turbos..no of fence to you dude when i said guys on here are assholes i didnt mean everyone just a select few....so what did it sound like when i took off could you hear the late boost

maybe the turbo back exhaust is causing it..idk turbo cars are fast but there a pain in the ass

There really not that bad. You need to learn to make a boost leak tester and then use it. I would also check your exhaust especially the up pipe and downpipe to make sure there not leaking at all. The up pipe especially would cause a ton of lag. I would contact ray@turbotektuning to help get your car straightened out if you can't figure it out and to also get it tuned when its fixed.

There are a lot of ass holes out there especially on forums but don't read into what everyone says. You'd be surprised about how many people on car forums act like they know what there talking about but when you see there car in person its a pos.

My advice is to take your time and learn more about the car and try and fix your own problems. At least then you will know exactly what was done to your car. Maybe you can post up pictures and a modification list so we have a better idea of what was done to your car.

Take that thing down to Ray @ turbotek or Ryan @ Area1320. Its really hard to troubleshoot someone elses mess if you havent worked on the particular car before.

You are only able to reach about 6-7 psi of boost.

and if you have a dp installed will cause you to hit higher boost than 6-7 psi late and slow

are you on a stock turbo?
