The Deep Thoughts Thread

This could be fun. I randomly have these deep thoughts, and I kinda enjoy it. I like thinking
about things that are hard to think about, visualize, or imagine. Things like, what was there
before the big bang? What is mirror matter? Does Sasquatch really exist?

What kinda deep thoughts do you think about? Here's the place to post them up and have a discussion about them!

I'll start....

I've been thinking about this lately. If you can break time down into smaller and smaller incriments...
such as .1 seconds, .01 seconds, .001 seconds, etc....when does time actually start? In theory,
following this model, wouldn't you be able to break time down into smaller incriments infinitely and
therefore prove that time never really starts?

CHAOS 11-18-2008 12:10 PM

what if we really are some of the smallest beings in the entire universe and beyond? perhaps we are just some childs plaything and we have no idea.

what if people see colors differently? like if we swapped brains and what we both knew as yellow.. you saw as my blue and i saw as your red... or something like that.

CarbonIS 11-18-2008 12:11 PM

isn't that the problem that colorblind people have?

CHAOS 11-18-2008 12:16 PM

no... they cant distinguish between colors... this is more like a complete departure from what you normally see... like we are so used to the colors... and what if you saw thru someone else's eyes and what you both know as yellow typically... they actually saw as your blue. does that make sense?

It makes sense, I just think its hard to explain. But I do get what your trying to say.

thats deep.... real deep

Snoozie 11-18-2008 12:29 PM

I don't know if this counts. lol

One time I asked Keith if another car going the same speed as us on the highway, but ahead of us, was really "ahead" of us in time. I couldn't wrap my head around why we weren't at the same place, if we're going the same speed. :screwy:

Buster 11-18-2008 12:29 PM

Jon I always thought that about colors, Like we all know them by name but dont actually see them the same way.

I cant think about the big bang crap though, I actually start to have anxiety when I do.

I wonder that too. When I see the color green, I know its green, but I want to call it orange and usually do. Its weird.

Buster 11-18-2008 12:33 PM

how about this, how does this thread have 8 posts and 0 veiws?

I used to think about this all the time as I was growing up. I would point at my brothers red shirt and ask, "What color is that?" Of course, he said red and I would do it with other things.
If you think about it, there is absolutely no way to describe a color. You can't say, "That banana is yellow like the sun" because what if someone else saw yellow a different way? It's hard to explain, but I'm right there with you.

CHAOS 11-18-2008 12:36 PM

i wonder what it would take to be able to self heal.

could someone truely live forever?

how long would it take for people to evolve if the world was flooded?

will al gore ever realize that global warming isnt completely caused by humans? and that it is an ongoing trend of heating and cooling?

since the continents drifted apart, will they have collide on the other side? what kind of effect would that have on the cultures of that time since it will be in the distant future?

what would it be like to commit suicide?

Buster 11-18-2008 12:38 PM

technically jon, the continents are going back together. they are moving at the plates.

CarbonIS 11-18-2008 12:39 PM

if according to physics, all of the matter in the universe only adds up to 50% of the total mass of the universe, then where is the other 50%?
mirror matter is some f'ed up stuff

CHAOS 11-18-2008 12:42 PM

is mirror matter the same as black/dark matter?

right im saying when they do eventually collide... when will that be? what will happen? will the earth even exist that much longer?

Snoozie 11-18-2008 12:43 PM

Dark matter is some crazy **** too. That kind of stuff, I cannot get my feeble mind to comprehend.

Buster 11-18-2008 12:44 PM

new mountains i guess lol

SovXietday 11-18-2008 12:46 PM

That color thing weirds me out. I can't imagine red being blue. ACK!

What is real?

Are there seriously BILLIONS of other brains, lives, hearts, thoughts going on at this exact instant that I type this?(

Or is everything almost programmed and wrapped around me.

Like when you see a car pass, and it "disappears" from your vision...does it still exist, or no, because your brain doesn't need it to be there anymore?

(Bill, we should have a drinking/thought party at the new place; I could make you wanna shoot yourself with half the **** that goes on in my head on the DAILY!)

Scapegoat 11-18-2008 12:55 PM

never heard of mirror matter... but we discussed dark matter briefly in astronomy class.

as far as colors, colors are actually scientifically used tools... and as such are pretty damn accurate. think about it though... if everyone saw colors differently, ie: my yellow is your blue, your blue is her green, etc... well... we wouldn't have a recognized color system.

Lots and lots of what we know about what we cannot touch, ie most of the universe, has been garnered from color via light. certain atoms give off, and absorb, certain light.

Time is relative. a year for us, is not a year for saturn. and "time" began when the universe was created. Simply enough.

The big thing is... if nothing existed before the universe... what was there before that with which to create the universe? Was there some form of matter before? Its certainly possible... i mean, when you destroy an atom, much energy is released and stuff happens... and there is matter smaller than the building blocks of an atom... did something happen to those to create the universe and now they have merely been reorganized into what we have now?

Kind of like, "If a tree falls in the woods, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?"

probably never in humans existence on this planet

we're looking at the sun turning into a red giant in 5 billion years.

fortunately for us, the earth will not be absorbed. However, it will become a molten wasteland much like mercury due to how close we'll be.

When the sun becomes a red giant, it will lose some mass... however minute... it will be enough that its gravitational pull will weaken and the earth will more than likely drift right outside of its body.

omgjacki 11-18-2008 12:59 PM

Damnit. I'm not getting any work done today. I love this ****.

CHAOS 11-18-2008 01:02 PM

anyone else enjoy stephen hawking theories? they are mind boggling.

No more like...are the woods even there...did the tree really fall...or is that how it was all "generated" when you went there to loo?

The universe can't be infinite...so what is at the edge? Beyond the edge?

the universe is expanding, there are no edges. we know for a fact that everything is moving away from the perceived center. Andromedia and the Milky Way are on a collision path as well...

The Captain 11-18-2008 01:10 PM

yes, it's expanding...but it must expand into something.

CarbonIS 11-18-2008 01:11 PM

mirror matter is kinda like dark matter. dark matter is thought to exist in our on dimension on an invisible wave length,
whereas mirror matter is suspected to exist in our universe, but in a different dimension that we do not have access to.
the only way to measure the existance of mirror matter is when it comes into contact with something in our dimension.
pretty crazy **** but apparently they have some evidence to support the existance of mirror matter.

doug 11-18-2008 01:11 PM

Man.. sounds like everyone in this thread has been puffin' the reefer.. why no invite?

These are total blazed convos.

i'll have to ask my astronomy professor about this one... we haven't even proved the existence of dark matter in our own "dimension"... something tells me we haven't gotten any solid evidence in regards to another dimension...

CarbonIS 11-18-2008 01:15 PM

i'm sure there's no "solid" evidence, but there's this one scientist who has some really great theories about it.
He's actually in the process of trying to prove that the Timgusca (sp?) Event was actually caused by a large
chunk of mirror matter interacting with our dimension in the atmosphere. I forget the guy's name but he's a
professor/scientist from Catholic University.

grimm 11-18-2008 01:15 PM

Here were a few that i have thought about...

1) is the world black and white or is there gray area?
2) Will a rubber band last longer if it is stretched and has the same tension on it it's whole life, or if it sits in a drawer un-used?

CarbonIS 11-18-2008 01:17 PM

i'd be willing to bet the lifetime of a rubber band is directly related to its composition as opposed to its usage.

grimm 11-18-2008 01:17 PM

anyone here watch the movie what the blep do we know? they talk about mirror matter in that i believe.

SuperMan_is_Bac 11-18-2008 01:19 PM

how can u answer a question, with a question?
