How to prevent a motorcycle from being stolen

Yoo guys i'm planing on picking up a bike soon however I have no where to park it besides for the street. I live in NE philly and am kinda worried that it would get stolen. So not really sure if im gonna get one cuz I dont know how to prevent it from being stolen. Any ideas?

redline 06-08-2008 01:05 PM

A bike on the street, nothing you can really do.

3000gtvr4tt 06-08-2008 01:09 PM

damnnnnnnn

05OCsrt-4 06-08-2008 01:15 PM

you can buy alarms for bikes, but don't know how effective they are

WRX_JB 06-08-2008 01:19 PM

Chain it?

Dark-Side 06-08-2008 01:25 PM

once you get that vr4 sold shouldnt you have room in the garage even with the 300zx

Vypurr 06-08-2008 01:25 PM

Fuel cutoff switches!

3000gtvr4tt 06-08-2008 01:26 PM

well i live with my grandpop and hes not to happy with me getting a bike so he won't let me put it on his property lol

3000gtvr4tt 06-08-2008 01:27 PM

haha im just worried about some picking the bike up and throwing it in their truck

Renegade_ 06-08-2008 01:57 PM

Take a wheel off and chain it to the mailbox?

blackbichGSX 06-08-2008 02:00 PM

You can get a brake rotor lock, but they can still cut it off if they really want to. My thought is the harder it is to steal it, the more they will look else where.

ToyotaTat 06-08-2008 02:50 PM

driveway at your brother's? prob. wouldn't get lifted from there

den9 06-08-2008 02:53 PM

if its a sportbike, and u leave it on the street, it will get stolen, just a matter of time.

Red94Celica 06-08-2008 06:01 PM

...full coverage insurance, or at least get theft on your plan lol

Thats what I was going to say. If they want it, theyll take it. Theres not much you can do to stop them once theyve set their eyes on it- and being that your parking in the street... there will be lots of lingering eyes.

Id get a nice insurance policy and a COVER. People are MUCH less likely to screw with a covered bike. Theyll assume it either doesnt run, hasnt run in a long time, or they simply wont notice it.

95SC2 06-08-2008 11:15 PM

lo jack is the best thing u can do for theft protection. if it is stolen just call it in and i think they say most recoverys are made within 24 hours. the dealer i work at installs them, i believe the unit itself is $600 and then about $150-200 for the install and then youre set. Other than that, just make sure youre steering is locked, and chain it to a pole or somethin is a good idea, i've seen a few people havee rotor disc locks and try to drive off with them on, not good

pulser9 06-09-2008 12:13 AM

just get full theft coverage with the lowest deductible. Its all you can do. My bro lived in newark and he had 4 bikes stolen in 6 years. I live in a very nice area with my parents so i havnt had problems at home and i keep it in the garage but my last bike got stolen when i went and visted my brother. its just the way it is. Some bikes you can lock the bars to the side so its imposible to wheel away but they can still pick it up. or lock the disc on some bikes.

pulser9 06-09-2008 12:15 AM

or simply park it near another nicer bike. i think that would be the best bet

3000gtvr4tt 06-09-2008 02:44 AM

hmmm lots of options but I think no matter what I do its going to get stolen lol that bike got stolen in 40 seconds in that video idk maybe ill keep pushin my g-pop till he says I can garage it. thanks for the ideas guys

420sx 06-09-2008 02:53 AM

Why not offer to take the motorcycle safety course to ease your grandpa's worries, and in exchange for completing the class, you get to garage it? The class is free (and fun).

X2! Also like everyone has already stated. You can get a disc lock and lock your steering column. In my opinion if your that worried about it, I would buy one of thoose big a** chains and lock it to something.

Vypurr 06-09-2008 06:13 AM

You could run a long bike lock from the through the front and rear wheels. That would stop it from ever rolling if they tried to put it in neutral and push it onto a flat bed.

05OCsrt-4 06-09-2008 06:44 AM

join a big bike gang and put their stickers on the side of it?

Archie 06-09-2008 08:05 PM

one idea i had since i live in center city was to get a couple bike chains for the front and rear through the frame and rear wheel. Get a medium sized tub or somthing large enough that it would be tough to lift and fill with concrete. have the post for the chain embedded into the concrete and wallaaaa. A heavy assed deterence. Gotta lift the bike and the 1 or 2 concrete blocks to snatch it or cut the hard core chains.

ToyotaTat 06-09-2008 11:30 PM

put a huge sign on the side that reads "PLEASE DON'T STEAL THIS", people can't ignore something like that.

upperguy 06-10-2008 08:44 AM

even the locks won't stop people who really want it unless you lock it to something. My buddy came out of his house to 4 dudes that had put 2x4's through the wheels and lifted it away. He had insurance so it wasn't worth him getting beat down for it.

HiSpeed48 06-15-2008 12:27 PM

the main point here is to prevent theft. although a good insurance policy will help financially, thats not going to prevent all the trouble you'll have to go through. and a lo jack will help you find it after its gone, but a stolen bike is immediately torn down after it is stolen, so no guarantee you'll get it in one piece.

some bikes are ridden away, others are picked up into a minivan or truck. disk locks offer moddest protect but still are not a guarantee.

i rent a storage unit, 10 x 10. it $50 a month but it's the best way to protect my bike. i would suggest that as being the best way to potect a bike.

this is how easy it is to steal a bike:

dam good point! rent a place is a perfect idea. as for a bike getting stripped down its o so true. we had a guy get his bike stolen and they found it in about 1 hour and it was already stripped down. all that was there was the frame and engine!

eviltalon 06-15-2008 09:59 PM

I pray that you can put it in your grandpops garage. I've heard too many stories about guys trowing bikes in the back of there pickups. G/L bro.

4 guys 2 metal poles and a truck solves that problem....i say get a bike when you have a safe place to keep it. NOTHING will stop people from stealing a bike on the street. also always get full coverage and GAP insurance.

Ski10804life 06-11-2009 03:43 PM

Get low Jack gps system for bikes, and also get a pager alarm. My roomate has a pager alarm that mages not only the remote but his phone, and it saved him once from getting his R1 stolen. The slitest fibration or touch of anyting on the bike will set it off, sucks becuase he got up int he middle ov the night one time and ran outside the bike had been bombed by like 25 birds hahaha

TurboTagTeam 06-11-2009 06:18 PM

1.Street bikes are generally stripped as soon as they are stolen. Lo-jacl is no good here...it's going to be found and destroyed.

2. Locks and chains are BS. Your your ready to seriously steal someones bike I would think you would have some boltcutters on standby.

3. Brake disk locks...steering colom locks...etc are useless. My bike weighs 350lbs. Easily carried away by a few capable people.

My bike is NEVER kept outdoors. And never parked where I can not see it. It sleeps in my garage and my St. Bernard sleeps next to it.....nobody is trying to steal mine.

Paul 06-12-2009 12:12 PM

i have a big garage, fits my bike, my subie and all my friends bikes, youre more then welcome to keep it at my house, i also live in NE philly

Archie 06-12-2009 12:29 PM

i have always liked the idea of a friends, put a small sign on it saying this bike is not worth your life.

flyers7732 07-04-2009 01:20 AM

sell it then you wont have to worry about it getting stolen lol

is that why katanas always park next to the duc ... hahaha

short or drilling into the pavement and installing anchors that way nothing will keep it from being stolen(even that won't stop it just make it very hard) i would install a very loud alarm and a disk lock .. a master lock actually worked for mine (through a hole in the rotor) i just attached a yellow bungie from the lock to my handle bar to remind me

brian91accord 07-04-2009 09:44 AM

get a kryptonite chain. You can get a wheel lock because it takes 4 ppl to pick a bike up w/ 2 metal bars. Parking on the street is hard to prevent

piku 07-05-2009 09:33 PM

Cover it - out of sight, out of mind. I've seen good bikes stay in the city for a long time without being stolen. Only if your immediate neighbors are thieves will it disappear but even then most people don't like to **** where they eat.
