How about, every car manufacturer has there ups and downs. GM isn't going out of business anytime soon, that's for damn sure.

They didn't "lose" $39 billion in operations, a substantial part of that was tax write downs.

any car can run for 1million miles. it all just depends on how much money you want to keep spending on repairs.

They lost enough to offer buyouts on every hourly worker, and that's more than enough to raise a red flag IMHO.

this one car is supposed to make me change my mind about american made products?.....

besides....we all have heard of that benze or whatev that hit one mill and benze sent the guy a brand new benze that was worth like 100k and bought his old car and put it in a museum i think.

For a brand that produced the Aztek, Malibu Maxx, and the Allante, there is little to look forward too, especially with these CAFE laws and the news that there will be no Trans Am.

i believe this is a big deal because this truck has the original motor/trans/rear. the older chevy/gmc trucks were great trucks. i would put them against a toyota any day. you guys have no idea.

wasnt there a car at the philly car show last year that went like 3million miles all on original motor/trans. might have been a jaguar?...thats impressive....

original trans is impressive, if it wasnt ever rebuilt. he must of drove so easy, never floored it, never put it in gear while rolling.

Just thought it was cool that there was a GM product that made it over 1 million miles, it's not often that you here about anything making it even half that.

The truck was a delivery truck in the midwest. All it did was highway miles. Not alot of stress on moving parts.

i dont think any jaguar has made a million miles. if it did, its one of the newer ones made by ford, jags are junk. i would like to see that saab because their not a whole lot better than jags. cars that have or could have reach thats much mileage if taken care of are cars like volvo's, ford's, chevy's,dodge's, toyota's, nissian's. im leaving some out, but you get my drift.

Don't compare saabs to that British junk...

Have you seen the XF? Gorgeous car, and they are built a lot better than they used too.

that looks like the car i was talking about with 3mil miles.......guess it wasnt a jag.....but that only has 2.6mil....so i guess i was 400k miles off....

The buy-outs are all about reducing the hourly cost of a worker. They are trying to get rid of the 30+ year tenure UAW workers who make $26+ an hour and cost them another $50 an hour in pensions and healthcare. They want them gone, so they can bring in new workers at lower wage; $10-$16 an hour, that will only cost them another $10 per hour in health care and pension. These are the things Toyota, Honda, etc. don't have to deal with since they have a non-union work force.

Yes, the General lost money and lost more than expected in operations, but they are well on the road to recovery and this latest move strengthens them even more (GM shares were up $.20 when it was announced).

As for the miles thing, I think the record is held by a Volvo with over 3 million miles or something. Volvo actually issues badges for the car when you reach certain milestones.

It's in a much better position than Ford is, but I don't believe the current product will enable it to push through anytime soon.

Perhaps I'll note that the first car to hit a mil was a '63 beetle. Not sure if it's still about, but it still held the record at 1.5mil or so into the mid 90's. Not on the original engine though. A stocker tends to need a rebuild at 100-125k as they do'nt have a full flow oiling system, no oil filter, just a screen. One of the most obvious cases of planned obsolescence in history.
2 stroke saabs are really nifty. They also had freewheeling clutches! It's really stupid the hate people have against certain manufacturers solely based on reliability. I'll take an xke or a sonnet over some boring modern car any day, thank you very much.
