Woman in water drinking contest dies

January 13, 2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

It was not immediately know how much water Strange consumed.

A preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death," said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.

"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.

Initially, contestants were handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore," he added.

After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids."

How is that in any way, shape, or form funny??

She was trying to do something for her CHILDREN and got freakishly taken from them in the process.

Funny?

not likely, no doubt the station's lawyers had participants sign some sort of an injury waiver, especially if it was a contest involving consuming mass quantities of anything.

ironically, the exact same day this happened (and with no knowledge of it), a co-worker and myself had a contest to see how much of a 5 gallon office water cooler we could drink. I drank 128 oz (1 gal) in about 50 minutes. After that, I felt dizzy, sick, and my kidneys started to hurt. Thats when I decided to stop. It was crazy scary-- I ate some salty snacks because I read that too much water starves your body of sodium and thats how you can die from it.

I heard the actual aired contest this morning on Opie and Anthony. They kept going back and interviewing this poor girl as she just got sicker and sicker right in front of them. Apprently there was a medical intern on site during the contest and he told her she would be fine, she went home and 5 hours later she went to sleep and died. They said she was a tiny little woman and her stomach was so swollen from the water she looked as if she were pregnant but they continually asked her to stop and she kept going. Its really sad, some stupid contest and 3 kids are left without a Mother...

ps- she did not win, she came in 2nd, her prize was tickets to see Justin Timberlake.

Tragic.

that about sums it up...

Yea, we actually got a whole crash course on this. We expected a mob of dumbass Lehigh guys to try this.

Supposedly this chick had a Hematocrit level of something like 89%.

Hematocrit is the concentration of Red blood cells to plasma/ White blood cells/ Buffer contents.

The normal range for a female is something like 42% + or - 5%.

She essentially sent herself into a Anemia, not because of lack of O2 or a Hemmoragic Anemia but because she he sooo many swelled Red blood cells that they clogged their coronary pathways. The body doubled its amount of O2 carrying red blood cells in an attempt to blast out the blocked arteries/ veins and get O2 to the vital organs.

wow, my brain needs a break.

Let me teach you a little secret about life.........

You know you want to be something with your life right?

You know that medical school isnt too hard in itself right?

Sooooo all you have to do is tell yourself, "This is what I want to be, heres the work, I need to get a A, so im going to stay home tonight and study."

Thats all I did.

Wanna know what i got on my SAT's?

a 900.

nothing, I dropped out of highschool when I was a junior and then worked my way up. got my GED and then went to community college, it's amazing how people won't really be interested in what highschool you went to if you leave it out of a resume aslong as you have colleges down

Drftpretty 01-18-2007 09:54 PM

Yea, I was the biggest D-bag in HS. Then had one teacher changed it all. Thats when I went and took placement tests :)

And got in!

I was just highlighting the general stupidity of people who do retarded **** to get something. True, its sad that someone has passed away, but come on. When you are doing something that is making you sick, and people are telling you to stop, but you insist to keep going, it doesnt highlight you as being very bright.

absolutely.

I was a slacker after highschool, therefore I am 25 and STILL in college.

When you get older responsibilities (ie, bills, car payments, health insurance) take priority over the things that REALLY matter like a good educaction that can eventually get you where you want to go in life. This is why I scored an 1180 on my SATs and work at a bank....
