Fatal Car Accident in DE, caused by "street racing"

*Ok I might possibly get yelled at for this but before I do, I tried a few times on Monday, and kept trying today to post this in Off Topic but everytime I clicked "New Thread" it said gateway timeout and wouldn't let me start one... But for some reason it will let me everywhere else. So since this is about cars it should be ok being posted in here.

Quick summary..
Saturday morning 2 cars, a Blue Saturn Ion Redline and apparently a silver 350z were racing down Elkton rd. in Newark DE. Theres a stupid light that a lot of people run (to make a left hand turn down another road. Well some 76 yr old lady in an older benz, i'm assuming ran the light, and made a left hand turn across Elkton rd. The Redline nailed her. And as you can see in that picture below, it wasn't pretty. It amazed me how clean that cut was, but anyway. There are no pics of the Redline, but i heard it didn't look that bad at all, that it def. didn't look like it was in the same accident the Benz. Well, the 350z ran. And the cops are looking for it now. I think it was the same 350z that i posted a spotted thread about awhile back. Thats the only 350z i've seen around here that isnt stock.

Anyways, it took the cops 7 mins to get the lady out of the benz and they rushed her and the saturn guy to the hospital. She was in critical cond. and died in surgery.

I'm kind of curious if this guy is going to get vehicular (sp?) homicide or not. Because chances are she ran that light, but if he wasn't speeding the accident wouldnt have been fatal most likely. My bf got into almost the same car accident like 5 years ago in that same spot except his buddy that was driving wasn't speeding and the guy that ran the light nailed them and turned the crx they were in into a crushed up little ball. And back then there was a camera at that light and the cops reviewed the whole thing, so i'm assuming the camera's still there.

I saw the pics of this in some other thread on here. The redline wasn't that bad, but still bad enough. I can't remember what thread though!

If she didn't run the light then the 350z and redline could have very visablly (sp?) seen that they had a red light. And at 9:15 in the morning on a busy road, others would have been stopped at the light.

So many people run that light because its the stupidest light ever created. Its not even an intersection, the only purpose of the light is so people can make left hand turns onto another street, which is good during rush hour. But at every other time during the day when its no where near as busy, the light stays red for people turning, instead of having a red blinking light like most lights. So i think she most likely ran it.

and I just searched the forum, for accident, wreck, saturn, redline, benz, elkton, and nothing came up about this so....

I actually passed by this accident at around 11:00am that day. Couldn't figure out how the Benz got cut in half like that. After seeing the paper, I thought I knew who the Ion was. I met this kid once at Cecil County. Fast car, but crazy driver. A friend and I drove out with him and he was driving nuts. Wouldn't be surprised if it was street racing, and also wouldn't be surprised if the lady ran the light. I'm sure it was a combination of speeding coupled with a bad decision by the lady. Sad that it had to happen, and sad that the guy has to live with what happened.

Here's an interesting thread on the Ion forums. Looks like some police may have been trying to do some detective work. Start reading on page 4 or 5.

damn...that benz was FUKCED UP

DC Hunny5 11-15-2006 07:44 PM

steph you remember when i lived on elkton road. it was ridiculous during the summer, you would hear some many freaking hondas and people drag racing down that street. i just kind of got use to them and finally could sleep with my window open.
That light right there does turn into a blinking light because i know i've made that turn a few times when the other side has the green light. I'm sure that they were racing and where that light sits it's right over a tiny hill, so i'm sure they didn't see her turning.
My roommate says she knows the 350z and that he's crazy (haha he hangs out with al) and it wouldn't suprise her that he ran. either way, that sucks for the saturn....especially if it's as fast as those saturn forums claim

Silverfc88 11-15-2006 11:40 PM

I wouldn't be suprised if they are looking around here now.

Sucks that it happened. Thats why its better to keep it at the track.

Shri2222 11-16-2006 12:16 AM

looks like that benz was a repaired salvage car sectioned back in the day with some crap welding. fell apart on impact

ScoobyNubieToo! 11-16-2006 07:44 AM

Well it seems to me that the lady who ran the light caused the accident, not the two douchebags street racing although I;m sure that didn't help either...

piknockout 11-16-2006 09:57 AM

She didn't necessarily run the light. As was stated previously, it does turn into a blinking red arrow. I too have made that turn many times. If a car comes over that ledge too fast, it will catch you really off guard. I'm sure she wasn't going very fast either to get across the street.

This is what I thought...I was kinda confused actually, lol

MissDSM 11-16-2006 12:56 PM

Yeah the guy in the redline does race a lot from what i heard. I was gonna post this in the first post but didn't want to piss anyone off and have them sat "A lady died because he was speeding, why are you going to sit there and compliment him or his car.." but yeah...

The kid in the redline raced my bf when we were in his car back in like... July or something. My bfs car runs a 14.8 1/4 mile spinning, so its a little better from a roll. The redline raced him from a roll, me and him were talking and we were like yyyeah, they run like high 14s stock, so it should be a good race. Umm no. The Redline ****ing left him, lol. They did a couple more little races from a roll then the guy turned off and gave him a thumbs up.

Now, that thing was pretty damn respectable for a Redline. And a lot of guys when they race someone and win... esp against a peon, would give a thumbs down just to be an ass... or just not do anything, but I thought it was pretty decent of him to give a thumbs up..

Anyway, yeah Ive never ever seen that light trun to a blinking light but I believe you. I'm fairly sure that that the light turning onto Elkton Rd. from casho mill rd. never changes, bc i've had to sit at that stupid light quite a few times and its never changed. And i've sat at the light that i think the old lady ran a few times and never saw it blink, so i guess I just assumed it never did.

Needless to say they shouldnt have been racing. Period. A lot fo people race down that part of elkton rd but not that fast. I mean thats a 35mph area then turns to 40mph i think. And theres quite a few lights and ALOT of roads that people pull out of onto elkton rd. A mile or 2 down it goes to a 45/50mph area with barely any lights/side roads and thats where most people race. I think they are morons for not doing it there. Because I think they had to be doing wwwwell over 40 to make that kind of a cut

something is wrong with that Benz... aside from the fact that its in 2 peices, the rest of the damage to the car looks rather mild. i would imagine if the impact was that strong to split a car like that, there would also be more visible damage to the car then there is. so im gonna go with the above person who said the car has been in 2 peices before and put back together shodily. if thats the case, it should be investigated because having a car that unsafe highly reduces your chances of survival.

Gaze 11-16-2006 03:14 PM

Throw the book at the Ion driver, and then throw it at the Z driver when you catch them.

Street Racing > Running a redlight.

Im going to agree with you on that.. It was probably done well before that lady bought it or Back when ANYTHING could be put back together.. Prolly around 1990 or before when safety wasnt much of an issue. Cause that car for the year it was SHOULD have been a tank.

The kid in the redline was nice.. I met him once or twice before at a meet on Elkton Rd. He was with DSR as well but he should have known better than to be racng down that road at 9 am.

The lady.. She shouldnt have run the light. IF it turns into a flashing arrow or not is beyond the point. Maybe it does at night. but you STILL have to STOP before going.

It was a combination of things and jsut because she is old and she died, they wont acknowledge her being in the wrong too.

But they shouldnt have been street racing either.

JDM87 11-16-2006 05:37 PM

its a shame that it happend but i agree with ugotschooledbyagirl

MissDSM 11-16-2006 05:46 PM

yeah its a tough situation, you're right... that thing def. should have been a tank. I thought it looked crazy when I first saw the pic.... that it was weird how clean the cut was with minimal other body damage.. and minimal damage to the redline.

After thinking about it... Something else could have been wrong with the benz. But chances are it was put back together.. or something along those lines... either way she was in an unsafe vehicle. But regardless, she was 76 years old. Even a small accident could have sent her over the edge. A body that old is way too fragile and who knows what kind of health condition she was in. So its kind of hard to decide what to do in the case of the saturn driver... Hell they might not have been racing. People see those kinds of "hooked up" cars next to another... they're loud, possible speeding somewhat (but most people go 10 over anyway)... and one of them hits another car and its automatically assumed they were "street racing." Im not saying they weren't, but I do know how much of assholes a lot of these newark cops are with younger people esp ones with these types of cars. And I know that the older people that live on and around that road are going to preach to high heaven that they were street racing in hopes that cops will get more strict about it

And just bc she died they will automatically put it on him.. So he better be gettin a damn good lawyer to make sure **** gets investigated.

UGotSchooledByaGirl 11-16-2006 06:24 PM

Yeah.. IT sucks.. Tho ITs Everywhere that they discriminate about that. They do it in hopes of cracking down.. but I dont give it long before some rich kid gets a damn good lawyer for being pulled over and sues the city or state.

EvlEgl 11-16-2006 06:52 PM

Wow reading that thread leads me to believe Cops are retarded when they try to become detectives. It was obvious what they were.

No pictures of the Ion?
