Tail of The Dragon "2007" Date:TBD

ROAD TRIP!!!!

http://pocket-rocket.smugmug.com/photos/98524307-M.jpg

Be sure to read this whole thread and see links below.. its full of info.

This thread is to judge REAL SERIOUS INTEREST in a road trip to the TN/NC border sometime in 2007 to put the dragons tail between its legs.. What is the Tail of The Dragon? The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, with 318 curves in 11 miles, is America ’s number one motorcycle and sports car road. It has almost twice as many curves as Nurburgring in Germany.

If you are serious about driving, want to use those mods to their fullest, and enjoy a good road trip.. this is the event for you. You... should drive this road once in your lifetime..

The date and arrangements have not yet been finalized. I can tell you that it will be late Spring or early Summer 2007 and that this will require at least Thursday - Sunday to complete and that is with driving straight through. There will be a few options for those that want to take a little more time coming and going.

I realize this is a ways off but an event like this takes some good planning. I will need to get final car club dates to ensure we do not go during MINI Cooper or Miata weekend.. Each of these events bring up to 500 cars just to drive this road!

So post up and SUBSCRIBE if you are REALLY SERIOUSLY INTERESTED .. More updates as time goes on.

Thanks,

Craig

markley02 09-28-2006 01:34 PM

I am up for this one! Is there any spacific hotel down there to stay at. It would be cool to have TST take over the entire floor of a hotel. lol

axelagrl06 09-28-2006 01:37 PM

i'm in

markley02 09-28-2006 01:41 PM

Well I was looking online and there are 4-12 person cabins at Carey Cabin Rentals. They are cheap too. About how many hours does it take to drive down there?

EvlEgl 09-28-2006 01:47 PM

That gives me PLENTY of time to get the talon back up and running I'm with barry on this one I'll do whatever It takes to get there.

Count me In

Pocket_Rocket 09-28-2006 02:46 PM

It takes about 12 hours to get there.. I personally would leave Wed night after work and get a good way down and finish up on Thursday to have Fri and Sat to play. There are several places to stay.. Topoco Lodge is right down the road too.. If there is enough interest I may see if we can get a group discount rate..

dwl137 09-28-2006 02:49 PM

I've actually driven on part of this road before when I was down in NE Tennessee to visit my grandparents. I'd heard about it and we drove over to check it out. It's an awesome road and well worth the trip. The only disappointing part is when I saw it I was driving a Toyota Avalon so it wasnt the greatest driving, but still awesome.

The Cherohala (Spelling?) Skyway is also an awesome road to drive on. The scenery is incredible imho.

markley02 09-28-2006 03:01 PM

I know I can drive the 12 hours straight, but maybe other people cannot.

Honest_Bob 09-28-2006 03:13 PM

I'm down. Sounds like a great way to spend my vacation days.

Renegade_ 09-28-2006 03:24 PM

this could be fun...

If I have my car done for it, I'll so come along

Pocket_Rocket 09-28-2006 03:28 PM

FYI: For those that would want to travel down with me I will be taking the lower part of the Blue Ridge Parkway to get there.. Its AMAZING..

I am most deffinitly willing to take the time off for this run.

markley02 09-29-2006 01:03 AM

How would this sound as an Itinerary:
Leave wednesday morning and stay the night in Roanoke VA (which is at the end of the Blue ridge parkway if I am not mistaken). Finish the drive down on Thursday and get some good rest to attack it Friday and Saturday. Leave sunday morning for the long trip home.

StreetEG 09-29-2006 03:10 AM

I wouldnt miss it for the world

gary 09-29-2006 03:51 AM

hmmm very intersted...

need some stuff first:
springs, struts, tires and brakes... should give me enough time to get that all squared away. Count me in!

MPowerKai 09-29-2006 10:56 AM

I usually go with the S2000 guys so I'm gonna have to see.

Buster 09-29-2006 10:56 AM

I really want to do it but after I read up on it earlier this year. My car isnt ready to take full advantage of it. And no I would never be able to take off for that long

TurboTagTeam 09-29-2006 10:57 AM

I'll do it. My mom lives about an hour from there. I could just drive down for a week long vacation.

I feel the same way about not being able to take full advantage of the roads, but I will have the funds by then for coilovers. New brake pads and tires would make it kind of an expensive trip but way worth it for me.

I agree 100% about Wed AM departure and straight shot home on Sunday but I am certain we can make it further south then Roanoke heading down. I do this almost every year heading down to the BMW factory in Greer SC for "Roadster Homecoming" We usually go down to Wytheville and catch 77 and stay there. There is a Holiday Inn Express right there. They have a breakfast bar with waffle machine etc... more then just a doughnut and coffee . Then its about 5 minutes to the entrance of the Blue Ridge. It takes almost 8 hours to get there. This way we have lodging and breakfast in one and we can set a solid leave time and hit the road. The further south we stay on 81 on Wed the better off we are. Trust me, we will have the very best of the Blue Ridge on Thursday because NC is where it gets good!

Pocket_Rocket 09-29-2006 11:59 AM

Here is what I suggest above all... Make sure your brakes are = or better than the power ability of your car. If your brakes are no match for your car then that is the one set of mods I would not go without for this event. This is not a flat road.. there are some really good elevation changes..

Everyone... Trust me.. you do not need a race prepped car for this event to have a good time.
Please do not let mod levels stop you. The great thing about this road is you can go at your own pace and the group wont lose you. You go back and forth on the same road.. 11 miles one way. 11 miles back to the start. See ya at the end when you get there.. thats all.
My nephew took his 05 Impreza RS with good rubber and still had a blast. ..

TehWagon 09-29-2006 12:46 PM

lots of time between now and then - but i'm down to really try and make this happen- it'd be a great way to see you guys!

2drStunner 09-29-2006 04:06 PM

i would love to do this! any idea on when?

Pocket_Rocket 09-29-2006 05:03 PM

Late spring probably or early summer. Early spring is when all the other car groups go down..

StreetEG 09-29-2006 05:22 PM

Im gettin race pads anyway---- Theres nothing like knowing you can stop better then the guy in front of you---- Oh and I guess I am gonna have to break down and get a more comfortable seat---and maybe a radio for the ride down--- but whatever 11 miles of beating the crap out of my car over and over again is totally worth it--

One thing though--- is anyone gonna tow anything down? AKA are we gonna have a truck/van to store tools/ spare wheels/ caskets for when something goes wrong? My car isnt suitable as it sits.....

BIRD 09-30-2006 12:38 AM

will the birdmobile make it?

Honest_Bob 09-30-2006 10:04 AM

I'll deffinitly have some new rubber and brakes by then.

YOU are nuts... I like that. Count me in.

I have family in VA, NC, and friends in MD. I may take the beginning of the week off and visit friends/family and then meet you guys there on Wednesday/Thursday. I'm not 100% sure yet. But I guess there's a 60% probability I'll be there.

I'm going to see if "Philly Boy" or "DanFromPA" are interested. They are just as nuts as we are.
