I really should have washed the car and wow it needs lots of body work. |

if you have a very purdy and expensive car, you can give the guy in back of you a wave around so you dont have to get down and dirty |
you make a valid point.
My car is definitally not purrrrdy....so I'll learn to pass, but i'm also still learning my car on the track. I've never fully pushed it to it's full potential around turns. |
yeah the day was really fun but i wasnt racing or pushing it... you couldnt go any faster than the person in front of you so it was just carving the turns comfortably really, which was fun too. i think a lot of people out there were driving at about 70%, which is fine for a day like that...
|
i think everyone would have been going harder if it wasnt for instructors slowing down the group leaders.
70% sounds about right for a lot of the day. although i did a lot of what they said not to do (slow down, then do bonzai lap  ) but in my defense, i was doing it before the uber cerial driver meeting so i got some nice 90-100% action in as well. or when i was trailing two sti's and an evo, i didnt have to really wait lol they would smoke me on the straight, and then i would come bonzai style through the course playing catchup :) but yea i would like more time on the track to get the lines down better. turns like the banked one infront, the wall was a little intimidating, so i wasnt exactly pushing the limits there |
yeah that would have been sweet to be behind cars (or drivers) that were more capable than mine, that way it would create a fun challenge to keep up.
i did 3 rounds... my groups got better each time i guess. first time i was in the most pathetically slow group to the point that i didnt know what ot do with myself and the other group on the track caught up to us. second time i was behind a 240 and a rx8... i kept things leisurely but at least got to work the suspension out a bit on that one last one i was behind 2 civic hatches and fred in his sti... again nothing crazy but we got to carve the course some, it was fun mostly because i knew a couple of the guys in the group. |
thats why its good to be the underdog!
having a less capable car creates the need to be a more capable driver. |
The 2 instructors that I had was real cool. They asked my experience level and then told me to push my car until I felt uncomfortable and then slow down. I never slowed down on my third afternoon session. Tires warmed up nice so I kept trying to see what my car had. I had fun so now I am hooked so next spring I plan on doing a couple more HPDEs.

^ I only had an instructor once and that was when the g35 crashed. The intructor told me to keep it in third the whole lap in my head i was thinking wtf my car revs to 9k and vtec dosent hit till 6k I was out of my powerband 95% of the track. None the less the instructor told me I did really well and said he had nothing to say to advise me to get better besides stop doing auto-x and start doing more trackdays. I will admit the lap I did with the instructor was my best one cause I used to reference cones and had a perfect line the entire time, the other thing that helped was I was the first in the pack so I had no other cars infront of me to distract me from my line; all my other runs I fell into the temptation of following the car infront of me line and that was a bad choice considering they didnt know what they were doing. I was really happy with the day and couldnt ask for a bettter expeirience for my first track day.
tsl got some decent pics of me on my first run. thanx to whoever posted the link I had no idea they were tacking pictures too. I would post some up but the school computer wont let me :( |
The SL guys got some sweet pictures. My poor brakes almost caught fire during my "banzai" run!

lol i cant believe you didnt pop those tires on the fenders. car looks crazy with them things sticking out the sides. you must be running some uber stiff springs or something
|
They did actually rubbed just a little on the banked as you can tell in the pic but nothing major though. Yes the suspension is super stiff but bigger sway bars are on order because I am still running stock and the body roll is unacceptable. Pics do not lie even though I really could not feel it that much. A wider track on a road course goes a long way that is why I have the wheels. I have plans of plasma cutting the fenders and adding some 240Z fender flares.
