Was the flash firing? It looks like it was, since you're using a tripod, you can turn your flash off and what that will do is open up the shutter for longer letting in much more natural light. Here's one from the meet 2 weeks ago when the sun had gone completely down but the shutter was opened for a few seconds to grap light coming from the parking lot lights...

You can see how long the shutter was opened by the guy in the top right corner who was walking...
