i just got my colt ar from cp just on fri. :) also depends on peoples view of a "good" gun. glocks are a good starter gun. less expensive, easily broken down and cleaned, good safe action system. i used to have a 36 which is a .45 cal sub compact slimline. smallest glock, prob i had was such a large bullet in such a small barrel it would jam A LOT!

i had that problem with my s&w .40 subcompact, also there wasn't enough weight to the gun it would snap your wrist really hard. my dad just got a Kimber Goldmatch ii .45 which has really good balance.

My dad has a 9mm so I may have him take me out to shoot. I just want to make sure that Susie, my home and our stuff is safe. I don't ever plan on carrying. I'm also looking into a gun safe.

if u dont plan on carrying id look into a shotgun, they r cheap, easier to aim and usually when u rack the pump its scary enough to make the bad gun run away.

I loled at that.

I'd have to agree. If it's going to be just for home defense a shotgun is in my opinion your best bet. Like den9 said, they're easy to aim & shoot and are far more effective at stopping someone then a handgun will be.

my question is do you live in a single family dweling or a townhouse/apartment setting? if u live in a townhouse/apartment prob not best to be shooting a shotgun in doors. :) also idk if insurance will cover the damage u do to your own stuff that your trying to protect when u damage that as well. I'd look at a handgun and look at a company called extreme shock for ammo. Its what i carry. Wont go through bodies or walls. when it his soft tissue it mushrooms like a hollowpoint. many SWAT teams in the country use them. There is also a youtube video show what they can do. trust me a decent hit with one of these in either .40 or .45 will put someone down, and if u got good enough aim to hit a vital organ it will put them down for good. They shoot a 275lb bull(IIRC) with a .45 and with one hit it drops.

H&K USP .40 , Para Ordnance .45 , Ruger SP101 .357 wheel gun here. I carry one or the other frequently. Also an Ak-47, SKS, and a Remington Wingmaster 12 guage.

I live in a town house so a hand gun would probably be best. My thing is though I would rather never have to use it.

true, but its better to be prepared and never have to use it than not be prepared and have the need to use it.

For the price they are unbeatable! Going to the gun show tomorrow to see if I can get a new bolt so I can mount a cool scope.

I have a Bushmaster M4 style rifle, 5.56. Looking into getting a Sig 220 when I get home in a few months so I dont feel naked from not carrying anymore.

ur better off with a shotgun, just get a 20 gauge with buck shot, i wouldnt worry about the rounds going through walls, a handgun will have a better chance going through a wall because there is a really good chance you will miss the bad guy, with the shotgun you wont have that problem because its extremely easy to aim. plus like i said the site and sound of a shotgun is scary enough. i always wanted to see what birdshot would look like when it hit someone in the face, that should wound someone without penetrating through walls.
