The way it was explained to me:

pulling the hammer back / preparing the firing pin to strike is one action,

releasing the hammer and having it strike the firing pin is another action.

a combination Dual Action / Single Action (DA/SA) (good example is the traditional 1911 pistol) means that the with the hammer at rest (not cocked), when the trigger is pulled, the hammer is pulled back (1st action) and then released (2nd action). after the round is fired, the slide will blow back, eject the empty casing, load another round, and the slide will return forward. the hammer however, will be recocked automatically by the slide, and will stay in a cocked position. when the trigger is pulled now (a lighter pull because the hammer is already cocked) the trigger will simply release the hammer (1st and only action IE: single action) and the gun will fire. until you run out of ammo, or you decock the gun, each trigger pull after the 1st one will be Single Action. if you decock the gun, the next trigger pull will be a Double Action pull.

A Dual Action Only (DAO) pistol means that with each trigger pull, the hammer will be pulled back, and then released. this means that when not firing, the gun is "at rest" meaning there is no spring that is holding tension IE: there is no way to accidentally discharge the gun without first cocking it.

Damn, that was quick! And yes, there are a lot of variants, not sure exactly how many though, but I know that my usp .45 compact is a variant 1.
