Thunder Lizard, the dragonov has always been a gun that I wanted, it's just not at the top of my personal list. It's a great choice though if you decide to pick one up!

Also, I ended up ordering a cheap SuperSniper 20x42 scope for the time being, it's a proven .50bmg friendly scope for a cheap price. I need to decide whether or not I am going to get a better scope eventually though.

i dont know much about high powered scopes, but my dad bought these swarovski binoculars and they are amazing, i wouldnt be able to afford a scope like that anytime soon though

what are some good scopes for target competition?

personally i like the thumbhole for target shooting, just feels more comfortable, i usually put both hands on the rear of the gun to steady it, and use a bi pod. i was watching videos on the 22-250 and .204 they are pretty nasty varmint rounds, 4000 fps

also thanks for the heads up on the used used USP, did it look like it was in good condition? i really wanted a diff gun in diff calibers, i originally wanted the usp compact in a 45 but i learned it was bigger than the 40 and 9, i decided on the 40 because 9/10 people i know shoot a 9mm, and wanted some variety. originally i wanted to collect a glock 26 9mm, usp compact .40, and a sigsauer 229 in a .357 sig

the used usp sounds like a decent deal, and i can afford that if it doesnt get sold in a month. about 17 days until i can buy one

does anyone know the advantages of a lem trigger over a da/sa? the only difference i see is that the da/sa u can c0ck the hammer back by hand, but has the possibility of getting snagged.

That's pretty much the reason for the LEM. It's so that they didn't have to carry cocked and locked, but they also didn't have to go through the long, hard pull of the DA. I'm sure there is more to it on how it actually works, but that's basically why it exists.

When I carry my USP, I carry cocked and locked. A good holster will stop any discharge of the gun. With the da/sa, you can carry cocked and locked, and have a very short trigger pull (single action). While decocked, it's double action and the pull is pretty tough which can effect accuracy.

so with a lem trigger i will have a long ass pull the first shot until the second round, or if i cock it first?

so to have a short pull on a lem on the first shot, you would have to carry it cocked, and unlocked since it has no safety?

the lem isnt really making sense to me except for the no snag hammer.

my dads smith and wesson has a lem trigger with a safety.

the lem has a da pull the first shot unless the slide was cocked back correct?

I can't give you factual answers to some of your questions.

There are two hammers with the LEM trigger, an internal, and the regular external. When you rack the slide to chamber a round, it cocks both hammers, leaving the external hammer in the DA position. It leaves the trigger in the DA position as well, but the pull is not as heavy as the DA. It is just long, until the end, when it gets heavier, where it fires the internal hammer.

As far as I remember, you can't carry it in the SA "cocked" mode. It's in the position explained in the above paragraph.

The first pull is DA if the hammer is not cocked for whatever reason (dry firing?). I don't believe the decocking lever (as my variant 3 has) is an option with the LEM trigger, as that lever is deleted.

its kind of hard to choose when it seems like theres no real benefits over each other. the lem is obviously safer to carry, but the sa/da has an option of cocking the hammer for a lighter first shot. man this stuff gives me a headache, its hard to understand without actually seeing it.

The lem isn't safer when you consider the option that you can have other variants decocked with the safety on.

With the other thread (RIP Officer Patrick McDonald), can we change this title to "The official TST I like LEGAL guns thread".

yeah thats true, i guess i should of mentioned the gun i was thinking about had no safeties. do both models have decockers? your usp decocks the hammer by pushing down the slide release right?

I'm thinking about getting a pistol soon. What would be good for someone who has never shot one before?

Fixed that for you sir :wiggle:

I'd say stay with a 9mm not only because its easier to shoot than larger calipers but also because its cheap and easy to find.
As with the corrections I made to Jeff's typos I wouldn't go any smaller than a compact.
The smaller the gun the less you have to hold on to.

At the very least go to a few shops and talk to them about what you want to do with the gun, your skill level, your price range, etc. Also hold a bunch of different guns and see what feels best in your hand. After all part of the shops job in selling you a gun is helping you find what you need.

If you're looking for a shop I'd suggest Locks in Philly.
www.locksgunshop.com
Their site blows but the shop is well stocked and the employees are very helpful.

the one that you shoot the best

rent some

the4g63 10-09-2008 06:31 PM

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try some out. Now, the problem is finding a dealer that I can buy from being that I'm not 21. I don't know of any non-federally licensed dealers around here.

Jeff told me to 10-09-2008 07:04 PM

Handguns don't happen till 21... Get caught with one before your 21st = priceless

the4g63 10-09-2008 09:32 PM

The way I understand it I can buy a handgun at a show or a dealer who's not federally licensed. If you read the law, nowhere does it state you have to be 21 to own a handgun, just 18 for guns in general.

Jeff told me to 10-09-2008 09:57 PM

Let me clean that up into useful info...

You can't buy a handgun till your 21[FFL style] but a family member[parents, grandparents] can do it for you as a gift

the4g63 10-09-2008 09:59 PM

Eh, law pwns me. I can wait then, lol.
