My aunt who just got out of the hospital was supposed to have arrived there yesterday with a group of people from my church. She obviously didn't go since she was in the hospital, but 20 other people from my church are there. Their flight landed at 1:30pm and no one has heard a thing from them since. They were supposed to be staying south east of Port Au Prince up in the mountains and away from most of the "city". But looking at the photos online I just can't imagine the destruction that has happened. If the capital building crumbled i would say that 90% of their structures are destroyed if not all of them. It's just a very sad event.

Someone said that the ambassaodor said the codes on the houses weren't built up to code to withstand an earthquake.

grimm 01-13-2010 01:13 PM

well i agree he does complicate certain things, usually to make a point but... for instance his special on deep frying a turkey. Well the rig he builds just to raise and lower a turkey into the oil is a bit ridiculous. I understand his reasoning for going into this amount of precaution but it's still a bit much. But like ken said everything he does has a purpose and is done how it should be, i like that he explains the science behind the recipe. helps make you understand how to use the same technique and apply it to other things.

i wouldn't doubt it, some of the photos my aunt took when she was there amazed me. the conditions people live in is just beyond comprehension. My shed is better built and nicer than most families homes. it's a shame. To have such a horrible thing happen to such a poor nation, i can't see how they will ever fully re-coup. Where do you take victims if there is no hospital? where do people go when they have no home? it's really hard to comprehend since we take these things for granted most of the time.

HickRocket1258 01-13-2010 01:21 PM

Yeah Grimm I have heard as well that it has gone down the ****ter at times. There's just really know way to help them out in my opinion. You could donate all the money you want over there but I don't see it doing much especially now.

Saddly I agree. they have nothing to export, the country it self has not way of gaining capital. I think wood or sugar was their most profitable export but even then, you can't generate enough income from those to support a nation let alone clean up and then rebuild one.

i still feel like the US should NOT be involved in any efforts to support that country. we simply can not afford it.

This. I'll even take it one step further and say that everyone here on a work visa should be sent home to their own countries. Our unemployment rate is 10+% in most areas. Our citizens should have first pics.

I also think our military shouldn't be in any country helping until their own country drafts all avail citizens to be in their army to help.

Jon, I reluctantly agree to a point. It's hard to see people in need and ignore them, besides trying to help out the people medically, i don't think we can afford to give them financial support. If we did give them money wouldn't it really be China's money anyway?

That's what many have said already. As bad as it sounds, why bother helping another country out when we can't even take care of our own problems.
