Man I haven't been shooting in awhile, I gotta hit the range up soo. Installed a AAC brakeout flash suppressor on my ar15 and installed a Larue tactical Fug grip to my tromix s17.

Well it can't hurt to look anyway, but just so that you know they're rare right now and that you probably won't find a good price on one. There may be a few there but you can probably expect to see a price tag of about $500+, depending on who is selling it and how much they want to gouge you. With the MSPR of $450 and online prices right around $400-$425, anything more is a waste IMO. I guess if you're willing to pay a premium to have it right away then that's a different story.

One option is to get on a local shop's waiting list and just wait it out. I've heard that S&W has been shipping out one or two per week or per two weeks to each shop. You might be able to find a shop with a low number of people waiting for one and end up getting one sooner than you'd expect.

I might "pull the trigger" on a Shield pretty soon actually. I love my 40C but if I could find a 9 or 40 Shield I'd definitely get it and just keep the 40C in my safe. The reduced width makes a huge difference to carry. I put a display-only Shield in my 40C holster at Heritage Guild in Easton and walked around for a few minutes and it's completely different in every good way, even with the holster being too wide for the slimmer gun. I'd switch out the kydex holster bodies and get one that fits the Shield and I can only imagine it would be even better.

im gonna stop by a local shop tomorrow. i will let you know what the list is like at east coast ammo. they had a 40s&w last week for like 425 used but never shot. i cant decided if i want the 9mm or the 40s&w any thoughts??

DC2.2GSR 10-03-2012 08:27 PM

As I've posted many times before (much to Dave's horror ), I'm actually a huge fan of .40S&W. I love my 40C and I think it's a very nice shooting gun and round, even in the smaller compact version of the gun that's more difficult to hold onto than the full size.

With the Shield though, I'd be tempted to switch it up and go with the 9mm. You get a higher capacity and less recoil to match the smaller gun, so I think it's a good choice. The 40 would still be good, but with the slimmer grip it feels like it would be a bit too much to hang onto and to fire quickly one handed and still make consistent hits. Since the smaller gun fits more of a back up or deep concealment role, I think you have to adjust the caliber to match the gun's purpose. This is of course just a best guess because I've never actually shot the Shield yet, only handled it in a shop.

It would be a lot more controllable if you use the extended mag that comes with the gun because of the extra leverage (making it almost identical in grip length to the M&P Compact), but I think that almost defeats the purpose of carrying the smaller gun. Sure the thin profile makes a huge difference in the way it feels to carry but as far as what actually prints, that's all the grip so smaller is better there.

hammtheman 10-03-2012 09:17 PM

from what i have read this gun shoots like a full sized 9mm. feels like a more solid gun then other pocket carry like the lcp and such. it feels more like a duty gun something you would carry 24/7 as say a police officer or military personel. now thats the kinda gun you wanna carry. one that feels solid and isnt gonna let you down when you need it most.

Yea what he said, don't get 40sw:-p

Look back a few pages.. I explained why 9 and 45 are superior calibers:mrgreen:

I held a 40 shield about 3 weeks ago. Should have bought it.

DC2.2GSR 10-04-2012 12:04 AM

There's a 9 Shield on PAFOA in the classifieds right now, just posted tonight. $450 o.b.o.

http://forum.pafoa.org/firearms-6/18...-9-shield.html

If it was me, I'd ask him to pay the transfer at that price or else offer him $420 and you pay your own transfer.

hammtheman 10-04-2012 12:01 PM

Thanks for the heads up dude. Hopefully meeting up with him tonight to buy the gun for 425

hammtheman 10-04-2012 04:41 PM

You like the idea of the Shield so why not an M&P Compact? With the three interchangeable backstraps you can make a real difference in the feel of the gun in about ten seconds.

You really should take a bit of money and invest in rental time. Most shops charge $10-15 per rental and they all require that you buy the ammo that they provide (not your own), but it would really allow you to get a true feel for some of the guns you're interested in. Holding guns only does so much. When actually shooting, your opinions can change pretty quickly. Sometimes something doesn't feel right when you're just holding it but for whatever reason you might love it once you shoot it. It could work just the opposite too.

Avoid French Creek at all costs. They're horrible to deal with, over priced, and they only have plain jane guns for rental (mostly Glocks), which are never cleaned. That place is for people who "just want to shoot a gun".

I'd suggest making the trip down to Targetmaster in Chadds Ford. From Boyertown it's almost exactly 1 hr. with normal traffic, which is about equal to Classic Pistol, and only a little farther than Target World (which I hear is about on par with French Creek in terms of quality and service anyway). I've had quite a few good experiences at Targetmaster and they have tons of rentals from almost all common modern companies and in almost any style, all of which are pretty well taken care of.

Where is a good outdoor range? I want to shoot sniper rifles.

lifeinacave 10-05-2012 06:42 PM

French Creek, only goes to a 100 yards tho.

DC2.2GSR 10-05-2012 06:48 PM

There are no free outdoor ranges that are truly "sniper rifle" friendly. You can go to any state game land range but they're only 100 yds. and they're usually full of people especially around this time of year. New Holland has a 600 yd. range and there are a few more here and there that have 200 and 300 yd. ranges, but the story is the same at each one - high membership costs, you can't join on the spot (waiting/vetting period), and you have to attend club meetings and work days (usually before being allowed to use the range).

Take a look at the HK P30's. They have a customizable grip and are very nice to shoot.

state gameland are not free you either need a hunting license or a permit

yeah you're right, I keep forgetting about that. If you can't tell, I don't use them. lol. I guess they'd still be the least expensive though compared to most private ranges.

Easton Fish and Game is really nice and very reasonably priced at $30 per year after a $30 initiation fee, but still it's only 100 yds. I think that's the case with most anywhere close to this area.
