Drag racing can be looked at as a business. Putting thousands of dollars into the littlest things to make your car consistent. I went to a race weekend to watch my buddy, that weekend, Friday was $5k to win, Saturday they had $10k and $5k to win, and Sunday $5k to win. Some people take it as a business. Hell, during that weekend down south, they had the $1 million race. Yes, winner actually won $1 million. The entry for that was steep though.

at that level hopefully you have some sort of sponsors so you don't have to eat all the cash.

Actually no. A lot of people it's cash out of the pocket. It can get pretty serious. The guy who won decided to sell the dragster he just won with so he could order a new one that I'm sure for the chassis alone will cost about $15k. Although a lot of them as well so own an auto shop of some sort, being able to write a lot of things off. A lot of people will put almost all their money into racing and have the smallest house ever. The rigs they usually own are worth about $300k itself.

My mom married one of these guys. He was living above his 6 bay shop and owns a $200,000+ mack truck based RV/car trailer setup. Now that they're married she made him get a real house ;)

LOL. No he still races. He just has a house in addition. She goes to all the nascar races and gets drunk with him and his buddies. She's perfect for a 50+ year old guy.

So I am probably going to sell my manual trans for the bimmer, but I'll pick up another one that isn't as great but will be fine.

Roto 10-31-2009 12:11 AM

Reason being the parts you can't find?

No. The driveshaft I got has the same part numbers for the two trans types this car had, but apparently the output flange is different between the two. I can sell the current trans for a good bit of money, and the money I get from it will cover another transmission to fit the driveshaft along with a new clutch. This way I can do a complete swap with just about everything new. Downside is that I would be taking a very strong transmission to a transmission that is good but if you drive like an idiot it won't last. However, I don't drive like an idiot so it will be fine and I know how to drive a manual.

I also don't want to buy another driveshaft because I don't have the money to buy another and buy the rest of the swap parts.

I drive like an idiot on what's thought to be a glass made tranny... no issues at all since the rebuild.
