When I installed my turbo my brother was under the car for like 30 minutes trying to get that hose on. Sucked big time.

RyanG 06-27-2008 06:25 PM

I use a special pair of looong needle nose pliers for return lines. They help a ton!

Buster 06-27-2008 06:55 PM

I like the old clamp the hose onto the return and drop the turbo onto the hose trick.

TROLL 06-27-2008 07:51 PM

Yeah I know a lot of people have issues getting the oil return line on properly, and I never really had a problem... until I installed the 3" Green.

Aside from the compressor cover having clearance issues, the APS turbo inlet not lining up with the turbo, the coolant return hitting the transmission, and so on... the oil drain hard line on the Green is actually slightly offset from the hardline that goes to the head, unlike the stock turbo which hovers directly above the hard line going to the head. On the stock turbo its a straight shot for the soft oil return hose, but on the Green it needs to make a quick bend to link the turbo and head hardline, and because of this the soft hose wasnt sealed up onto the hard line. I was able to spin the hose a bit and push it down to get a better seal on the lower side, and I added actual hose clamps to both top and bottom this time instead of the crappy pinch clamps.

We had originally attempted to use a longer oil return hose but it was too stiff and it was just combined with a lot of other difficulties involved in installing the turbo. Poor Anthony was with me for the turbo install so he can confirm that we really struggled to get it in (and I never want to take it out again!).

Anyway, for those looking for more info to the story, there it is...

think anything might be rattling around causing some false knock...I'm trying to trouble shoot some knock issues and that is what the fingers are starting to point towards.

i've also been trying to troubleshoot this mystery knock when i blip the throttle. some other guys on nasioc have shared their experiences as well, and i'm going to try one of their ideas. a couple guys actually found that they were knocking at that low load low rpm from not having enough timing in that area... they compared their current map to the stock and found the stock actually runs quite a bit more timing down low... changing to near stock values remedied the problem. that is my next step...
Check your throttle enrichment table too.
Stock map might run more timing, but thats because the stock map is also running LESS boost.

Phantom knock is a rare thing to have, because the knock sensor is tuned to only listen to very specific frequency. A good way to find out if you have phantom knock is to lower your boost as low as possible and try to watch your a/f ratio. If the car is rich, but you still have knock, then chances are its fake (but still very unlikely). I had a similar issue with my car. It would knock even at low boost (with rich afr). Turned out to be a faulty air flow meter that was making the ecu hit a lower load cell then where it should have been at.

TROLL 12-19-2008 01:53 AM

Well this journal hasn't moved in a long time... the update is that the car is treating me wonderfully. Only thing thats changed in a long time is the tuning to make sure the car stays happy.

The other news is that although I thought I was retired from the contest scene, NASIOC has taken each of the 11 winners from each Top Scoob contest and has put them all up against each other in the first Top Scoob Classic, which got underway a day or two ago I think. That means I'm up against 10 other insanely nice cars... a lot of them built similarly to mine in that they are clean and subtle. There's no way I'd ever win this one but I really don't mind... I'm honored to be among this group at all.
Anyway, its posted right on NASIOC's home page with a pic of each of the cars so thats kinda cool... I'll link it below and if you want to check out the thread then just click on the photo...

I'm loving JaiMak's GC wagon.

TROLL 12-19-2008 03:22 AM

Ah... just click the picture montage I posted above and it will take you to the thread on www.nasioc.com which is a massive subaru forum...

DPancoast 12-19-2008 12:26 PM

Bry, while I love your car, I'm gonna have to vote for the Legacy. :-p

TROLL 12-19-2008 12:44 PM

haha understood susie... there are a lot of super nice cars to choose from.

and thanks dpancoast... what i really need now is some downtime from the projects. thats the plan after the supra is on the road.

DPancoast 12-19-2008 12:48 PM

yeah thats understandable man. with 2 project cars, a website, and your job/life, you gotta be BEAT haha.. take some time off, get some hookers... and snort some drugs....

LOL nah, Im jokin....

about the drugs part :)

nah but downtime is good. Good luck!

evogsrviii 12-19-2008 01:23 PM

congrats on the car. i would put your car up there in that contest, def top 3. not a fan of the way the wagon or the rs looks, not subtle at all. I like the ver 8 swap the wagon has, but look wise, its ugly. the two bugeyes(yours and the black one) look very nice and i also like that last sti. gl with it!

Kevin 12-23-2008 01:32 PM

Showin' some love to the subaru.. its been a while hahaha

BugEyeGuy 12-29-2008 04:41 AM

here I am commenting on this so late but damn i'm blown away at how crazy he made this bugeye nicest one I think i've seen yet I am hoping to swap an 06 or 07 sti 6spd tranny into my bugeye as well props to you troll a work of art!

Vypurr 12-29-2008 01:17 PM

It's funny, I never see this car any more. Is it all good?

TROLL 01-02-2009 01:54 AM

Cars great... I drive it a couple times a week and its always fun. I've done a good bit of self tuning to get things all peachy but I'd like to get it on the dyno by springtime to get things touched up and all.

And to my surprise I made it to round 2 of the Top Scoob Classic... dont know how this happens but I guess I'll just be glad people like my car :)
I'd have to finish in the top 3 to advance to the final round... haha, doubtful.

Just when you thought it was over, Round Two of the very first Nigh-Annual Top Scoob Classic kicks off on a ten day slug-fest.

Now it's up to you to decide which one of these amazing machines will take the honors in the first Nigh-Annual Top Scoob Classic.

Just click on the BIG picture to see the cars, read the stories, and then cast your vote for the next Top scoob.

I know I am reviving this thread but I just saw the video of it on the dyno on youtube. This car is my new inspiration for my car. Quick question how long did it take you to do the sti swap?

jesse096 12-02-2010 11:07 AM

Hows the car treating you Troll? Always been a big fan of the bug eyes!
