I know the .556 is lighter, greater velocity, with supposedly just as much stopping force as the 7.62 with less recoil and all that. I know the 7.62 in AR frame is not the most popular and some people may say why not just have gotten an AK for the same price or cheaper? Well I really liked the look and ergonomics of the weapon i choose and the ability to add some nice tactical accessories, unlike an AK.

As well as the long debated .556 vs 7.62 in stopping power. Hell Ive heard stories of marines picking up AK's in battle because they were not confident in their m16's .556 to put down their enemies. (I do not want to start a debate here, because both calibers have their positive and negative attributes) Hell it was insisted that NATO Countries adopt the .308 or 7.62 it was the United States who went against this and adopted the .556

So i guess in a sense those are some the of reasons i choose to go this way, and like i said i could always throw on a different upper down the road such as .223

Since .556 and 7.62 ammo prices are not huge price difference anymore that didn't really weigh into my option, however, if you find some milsurp it is definitely cheaper to shoot...

There's a big difference between 7.62x39 AK ammo and 7.62 NATO (7.62x51 ~ .308 WIN)

Thanks for pointing that out as i know there is a difference from the 7.62x39 to the Nato and I was referring them to be the same (mistake on my part)

still a noob too so pardon my ignorance

I love when civilians talk about "stopping power" in personally owned weapons that sit in their gun safe and the most hostile thing they engage is a silhouette target

These hammers will go on a 30 page debate over ballistic characteristics like it makes a ****ing difference when they go into combat at their gun range

Shoot some mother****er with anything, from a .50bmg to a .22LR, body armor aside no one is going to get shot and be 100% effective afterwards

Stopping power is only relative to the impact area on the target, you can shoot some schmuck with a ****ing howitzer but if you graze his ass the "stopping power" doesnt really count for dick now does it?

I'd rather put a .22 into someones chest than graze their shoulder with a 12 gauge slug

And remember, anything worth shooting once is worth shooting at least 3 or 4 times

This is why when people ask me for caliber recommendations I always answer with, "you should carry a weapon that fires the largest round you can fire COMFORTABLY and ACCURATELY." For some people that's a .22, for others it's a .45 or .357. As you said, stopping power doesn't mean crap if you can't hit what you're aiming at.

So after a few short emails with DPMS, they told me they do not have really what i am looking for, although i see in their catalog a bunch of different handguards...

They said 7.62x39 barell will not have an effect on hanguards and that any AR 15 hanguard should fit?

I am looking for a 2 piece, 4 rail attachment...im assuming full length?

A full length system will require removal of your existing railed gas block and replacement with a low-profile gas block. I'm not sure you'll be able to find one that fits a 7.62x39 barrel but of course I've never looked...

Go with a 6" system (standard carbine length) if you don't want to mess with the gas block.

Troy 2-piece drop-in. Best relatively low-priced rail out there, imo.

I'm running their 10" full length free float system and the manufacturing fit/finish and overall quality is excellent.

Midwest Industries and Yankee Hill Machine are 2 other companies worth looking into, imo. A buddy of mine has the full-length yankee hill handguards and is very happy with them.

I'd recommend staying away from UTG and NCStar.

Just a heads up you now need either a hunting license that's valid or a one year 30 dollar permit to shoot at gameland ranges, they started this in April. needs to be showing at all times too, I heard their fining people left and right now too.

Reds82 06-06-2011 07:46 PM

Cool did a little reading on them couldn't find a yes or no answer did however find that cprroducts went under who made the mags for your rifle so if you see them for sale snaggem up

SvicksTc 06-06-2011 09:39 PM

Well just joined Ridge and Valley Rod and Gun Club, going to shoot the AR this week :)

I figured for the price of the membership and what a good amount of people said about the club on PAFOA.org ill give it a try...

Can take one guest so if anyone wants to go sometime let me know, its in Coopersburg PA on Blue Church Rd. South

Going to check out some AR accessories in a little, thanks for all the input so far...

Reds82, i heard magazines were hard to come across...so that makes sense now, im going to have to keep an eye out. 2 mags will hold me over for now, but i know im going to need more

Wow, would not think that...Thing is i called them yesterday and their hours end at 5:30pm. I dont even get off work until 6ish. So on my day off Friday, im going to run over there talk about some handguard options, pick up some ammo...

I picked up some bench rest bags yesterday, as well as, ordered 2 10 round magazines straight from DPMS (for bench shooting). Glad my rifle came with 2 30 rounders since CP is no longer in business...

SvicksTc 06-09-2011 10:06 PM

Going to Donely's then the range for a good while tomorrow :)

Ill let you guys know how I make out

might not benefit you, my local walmart only has winchester 115gr and they are 14-15 for a box of 50, $22-23 for 100. Donley's has a few brands for $10.
Even still, I like supporting the little guy, f*ck walmart
