Yeah I'd be interested to see a picture with alll your gear packed and how big the case is. If you can carry that on, that would be sweet.

Edit*** ok carry on it is, can you post a pic of all the equipment in and what you fit, and also how big it is?

sorry but this would be a great option to my typical backpack that everyone hits into.

grimm 07-21-2009 12:12 PM

the case is designed to meet "US" carry on size limitations, international carry on size is smaller.
yea i'll post ups some photos with it packed. and one with the equipment out of it.

Off hand it holds:
40D with grip
5dMKII
70-200 with lens hood on reversed
24-85mm lens hood off
50mm
10-22mm lens hood off
8CF cards in cases
3x spare batteries
6 filters in cases
flash cords
stofen diffuser
bulb blower
cyber syncs
camera manuals
flash manuals
table top tripod
spare quick release plate
lens cleaning supplies
15" mac book w/ power cord

there is probably 2 open compartments with all that packed up i'm sure if i spend some time arranging it i can fit more.
the real killer is having to lay the 40D with grip on it's back. takes up double the space.

i thought it was going to be bigger as well. the stock pictures are kind of deceiving. it's only 22" tall and maybe 11" wide. I'm 5'-7" and it comes to my knee. but for a carry on, it can't get any larger. they do make larger photogear cases.

So it's pretty much a pimped out regular Pelican 1510?

cszakolczai 07-21-2009 06:47 PM

I hope the airline doesn't give you a hard time with it. If they do, seriously just keep fighting them until they give in.

grimm 07-21-2009 06:51 PM

a pimped out 1514 to be exact. In fact if you don't care about the laptop part the 1514 is a great option, and $100 cheaper.

not sure why they would, the size is legit for carry on. they might go thru it all which would be annoying but shouldn't be too bad. I'm just concerned with the tripod.

I dont see why the tripod would be a problem, but you never know.

i just fear it since it is over the length of a normal carry on.

here are some initial pics of it with my gear. I didn't really play around with it to find the best layout.
under the blower and diffuser are the 24-85mm and the 50mm lenses.

well i'll be heading off to chicago tomorrow bringing the pelican case as my carry on and a bag with my tripod as my personal item.

grimm 08-25-2009 02:47 PM

So just to update this thread.

The trip to chicago went well, but the pimped out portion of the pelican case did not quite hold up to the quality of the rest of the pelican case. Basically the foam cut out that hold the mac book was too large and didn't hold my mac book pro snuggly. Which put a lot of weight and pressure on the laptop lid causing it to pull open. So practically every time i opened the lid of the case, my mac book was there about to fall out. being that mac books are not cheap and their site specifically states it fits a 13" 15" and 17" mac book. i found this extremely un-acceptable and sent a letter to the company (CPD Industries) expressing my concerns and asking for a refund and to return the case. A sales man got back to me offering to create a new custom cut out for the exact dimensions of my mac book. I accepted this offer instead of getting a refund. So they sent out a label for return shipping and I sent him the dimensions or my mac book pro. That was on Aug 14th.

Yesterday August 24th i sent an email to the sales man asking for a status update on the case. He replied stating the case has been shipped look for it later this week. Then today i get 2 calls from a un-familiar number, i return the call and it's from CPD Industries. They track down the person who called me, their shipping manager, and he explains that the case is being shipped out today and i should receive it by monday. This kind of came as a surprise to me since i was told it was shipped already butif it is all corrected and good then i'm not to worried about the wait.

Long story short, i think getting the plain jane 1510 case with padded divider set for $175 is a much better deal then purchasing this case for $110 more. The 1510 case it self was great and did an excellent job, no hassles at the security check points, no worries about the safety of my gear. The pimped out laptop portion of this case is not the worth $110 additional dollars for many reasons.

1) The laptop portion is cheap and is not up to the same quality standards as the case it self.
2) Having the laptop portion installed prevents being able to fit a camera w/grip in a standing position. (they have to lay flat on their back, taking up nearly triple the amount of space.
3)The power supply storage area is small and does not hold the outlet side of the power cord? (very bad design)
4) The clasp that holds the laptop lid shut is not sturdy, and the design is not well thought out.
5) It's only $65 shy of the cost of another whole case!

Hope this helps anyone that was interested in this sort of product.

update: got the revised case today, the company did not make the new cut out to the specifications i gave them, their cut out is smaller than what i specified. on top of that the issue with the internal lid for the laptop opening while in travel is still an issue. I am trying to return this case at this point, i would be much happier with a normal 1510 case with the padded dividers, for the up charge to get this case with the laptop portion i would rather purchase a pelican laptop briefcase as it would provide much more security and protection over this pimped out 1510 case. :( ugh such aggrivation!
