I'm pretty sure, but don't take my word for it.

sisforsurfing 07-13-2009 09:55 PM

Yeah, 1D (not 1Ds) sensors are all 1.3x and not used anywhere else.

At least the 1DII will focus properly! (har har har)

97TurboDSM 07-13-2009 10:05 PM

it's not a 1DsII or I would have said so. The move from full frame will not (at least i dont think) bother me one bit. As for it being overkill, to be honest, the 5D was overkill if we're gonna go there. I do this for fun, not to make money. I like to switch it up and a 1D body is something I've been wanting to try for a long time and for $150 more than the 5D sold for, why the hell not? My delusions seem to be fading so hopefully there wont be a full gear sale/rebuy any time soon. If someone wants to pony up the extra 1K for a 1DsII, be my guest.

grimm 07-14-2009 08:34 AM

I thought the 1dsII would have been overkill, unless you are doing more sports, other wise the 1dII seems like downgrade from the 5d.
hope you enjoy it.

97TurboDSM 07-14-2009 10:03 AM

Downgrade? I hardly think moving to a 1series camera is a downgrade. I will be doing sports and the only thing I see myself missing is the High ISO awesomeness that the 5D puts out but there are ways I can overcome that.

YO CAMRY 07-14-2009 12:32 PM

So which one did you get? The sequence one or the single one?

grimm 07-14-2009 12:48 PM

i guess i just don't see the reason for moving to that body...

Supersprynt 07-14-2009 12:54 PM

8.3 FPS vs. 3.0 FPS is good enough reason for someone shooting sports.

grimm 07-14-2009 01:30 PM

i guess that makes sense?... gain more fps but loose quality in each of those shots? it certainly is more of a trade off?
again i hope you like it.

Supersprynt 07-14-2009 02:09 PM

I guess it comes down to having the ability to get the shot in the first place, then worry about quality. The pics will not be able to be printed at the same resolution, but how big will they ever be in the first place.

97TurboDSM 07-14-2009 09:54 PM

how is having a 1D body sacrificing any type of quality over a 5D? I just dont get where you think this downgrade in quality is coming from?

Only thing I see as a downgrade is the weight. ****s are heavy.

Just to refresh everyone's memory, the higher the megapixels the bigger the print size. Not a big difference in quality at all, depending on the megapixel difference.

97TurboDSM 07-15-2009 08:26 AM

I'm not counting on the weight being a negative thing at all. If anything, I prefer a heavy body as opposed to something extremely light. I'm getting an extremely well balanced, weather sealed, PRO body. I'm still failing to see how any of this is negative in any way?

grimm 07-15-2009 09:13 AM

It's a 5 year old body. The build quality of the 1DII is great, the technology inside it is 5 years old, that isn't cutting edge anymore. Besides durability, AF points and the FPS i don't see any other real use able gains. You loose MP's, which contrary to above, doesn't just allow for larger printing, it contributes to clarity, lower noise, and cleaner tighter crops. The LCD is poor quality and tiny. The image quality is about the level of what a 10D will get you and with out bumping up the internal sharpness the images are soft. Sure it is packed with more features then the 10D or even the 5D but how many are going to be of any real use? Dual memory card slot types? Internal color and sharpness adjustment parameters? Dark Frame subtraction for noise reduction? A lot of the more useful features are now standard on the newer bodies.

Samples:
5d Compared to 1dsII
5d Compared to 1dsII
1dII Compared to 10D
1dII Compared to 10D

Again, I hope you like it, and I hope it works out better for you than the 5D. Personally, it's not the body I would have chosen. I looked at the 1DII and the 1DSII when i was in the market for a new body. I didn't see the need or usefulness of what it offered. but that's me.

97TurboDSM 07-15-2009 09:21 AM

like i said before, i do this for fun. This is simply a gear change because you know what, i can, and it's not going to affect me AT ALL. If i don't like it, then so be it. It will get sold and I will pick up something else. But for $3500+ for a 1D3, 2500+ for a 1DsII/5DII, or simply picking up another 5D, trying a 1D body (in my mind, "old technology" or not) was a good choice.

This will be my 5th body. If that's any indication, I don't stay with gear all that long. That's all, this thread really went to ****.

I disagree. Grimm is simply voicing his opinion, and he has a good point. I had a chance to buy a Nikon D2H, sure its a pro body but my D90 has all of the same features with a lot better ISO performance. Everyone has their respective reasons for purchasing camera equipment. Some of us just disagree with a move from a 5d to a 1dii

97TurboDSM 07-15-2009 10:03 AM

I'm just not sure what's to disagree about? The move to a 1D2 was not because I thought i'd be getting a "better" body. I realize there are sacrifices involved and if I was concerned with them, I wouldn't have made the choice I did. I dont just go buying gear on a whim, choices are thought out for the most part, sometimes they're made just for fun. If I'm not pleased with the performance of the camera, everyone will know because I'm not going to hide behind it and praise the body if it doesn't deserve praise. Regardless of the fact that the camera may be an elderly 5yrs old, people, and a lot of them at that, are still using 1D2's. If I wanted to spend the extra cash I would have said **** you to Canon and bought a D700 but I decided to go this route instead. Who knows, maybe I will throw a big middle finger to Canon and go with the D700 which will give me EVERYTHING I'm looking for in a body instead of picking the best 2/3 like I/we do with Canon.

grimm 07-15-2009 10:08 AM

I think you have my intentions all wrong. I was merely stating that "I didn't see a reason to change to this body". You then asked why I saw it as a downgrade, so I gave you my answer.
I again will say that I hope you like it and that it works better for you than the 5D. I'm not wishing bad upon you or trying to ruin your thread, like stanic said i just have a difference in opinion.

I now know not to voice my opinion.

BlackTypeR 07-15-2009 10:09 AM

You seem to focus waaaaaaay too much on gear rather than actually taking photos. But whatever makes you happy :)

97TurboDSM 07-15-2009 10:21 AM

lol grimm, you are welcome to voice your opinion to me whenever you want. lord knows i do it to everyone else. I didnt mean to offend you, i appreciate everyones feedback, really. I just wanted everyone to know the driving force behind my purchase was not necessarily to "get a better body." I had TONS of fun with the 5D and I'm sure I'll have tons of fun with this. Who knows, maybe i'll pick up another 5D to lug around

Bob, I do change up gear a lot and when I sold the 5D I wasn't expecting to pick up new stuff so soon but I really couldn't pass this up. I need new lenses before i can go shoot anyway!
